Fine season ends in semis

BURBANK — There was a major roadblock facing the Burroughs High boys' tennis team in its quest to qualify for its first-ever trip to a CIF Southern Section championship match.

The roadblock came in the form of a talented Palm Desert squad.

The Indians had to hit the road Tuesday to take on the host Aztecs in a Division II semifinal contest. Palm Desert, the No. 1 seed, came into the match with just one loss this season, had two CIF titles (1995 and 2002) to its credit and advanced to two championship matches (2008 and 2010) in the last four years.

In contrast, the Indians were playing in the semifinals for the first time, and they were unranked going into the playoffs.

The experienced Palm Desert team proved just to formidable for the visiting Indians, as they fell, 14-4, in a contest at the Las Palmas Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

The loss ended a productive season for Burroughs (12-4). Along with placing second in the Pacific League, the Indians had playoff victories against Oxnard, 14-4, No. 5 Villa Park, 10-8, and Beverly Hills, 10-8.

In singles, Burroughs' Garrett Auproux won two sets, 6-3, 6-3, Calvin Fox won one, 6-4, and the doubles team of Phillip Lam and Kevin Hoang took one, 6-4.

The Aztecs (20-1) won a title in the Dessert Valley League.
