The Bulldogs — No. 3 from the Pacific League — were paced by Stephanie Eskander, who had nine kills and four aces. Teammate Jamie Gonzalez added seven kills and seven digs, Reily Brennan had six kills and Tyler Brooks had 19 assists and nine digs.
Xavier Prep (13-4) was the runner-up from the Desert Valley League.
Burbank will take on host Whittier Christian (22-2) in a second-round match at 7 p.m. Thursday. Whittier Christian is the No. 2 seed and won the Olympic League championship.
St. Paul d. Providence, 25-14, 18-25, 25-12, 25-22: The Pioneers couldn't win their CIF Southern Section Division IV-AA first-round playoff match on the road Tuesday.
"We were pretty evenly matched, but they had a big middle who we just couldn't handle," Providence Coach Josh Eggleston said. "But I give our girls credit; they came to play."
Providence (8-11 and the No. 3 team from the Liberty League) received a season-high 19 digs from April Leyva. Teammate Thalia Alvarez had eight kills and 18 digs and Jenny Nardoni had 15 assists.
St. Paul (20-11) as the runner-up in the Camino Real League.
GIRLS' TENNIS
Rowland 14, Burbank 4: The Bulldogs faced a tough opponent Tuesday in a CIF Southern Section Division II playoff match on the road and were defeated.
"This was a good team we played against, a team that placed second in their league," Burbank Coach Loi Phan said about the Raiders (14-2), who were the runner-up in the Hacienda League. "We knew we were in trouble when we watched them warm up."
Burbank (10-7) is the third-place team from the Pacific League.
The Bulldogs got two set wins from singles Meredy Gharabegi, 6-2, 6-1, one from singles Ashley Basco, 6-2, and one from the doubles team of Minyon Kim and Veroncia Mendoza, 6-2.
Cypress 15, Burroughs 3: Indians singles player Kathy Henry won two sets Tuesday in a CIF Southern Section Division II wild-card playoff loss on the road.
The Indians (8-19) placed fourth in the Pacific League and the Centurions (16-4) were the No. 3 team from the Empire League.
BOYS' WATER POLO
