Pioneers in title game

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Providence 47, Milken Community 33: The Pioneers earned the win Thursday to advance to the championship game of the Patriot Winter Tip-Off at Viewpoint High.

Providence (4-0) will take on St. Genevieve for the title at 2 p.m. today.

Bea Benedicto had 11 points and 12 rebounds, Nicole Mungues added 11 points and Catherine Saint had 10 to pace Providence. Katia Dabbaghian had 12 rebounds and five assists.

Providence 58, Holy Family 18: The Pioneers breezed to a win Wednesday in the Patriot Winter Tip-Off at Viewpoint High.

The Pioneers were led by Bea Benedicto, who tallied a game-high 22 points. Teammate Catherine Saint added 12 points and Nicole Mungues had 11.

Burbank 2, La Salle 0: The Bulldogs dominated play in the first half and earned the nonleague shutout Wednesday on the road.

Burbank (2-0) had seven shots on goal but couldn't find the back of the net in the first half. The Bulldogs' defense kept the team in the game, however, allowing just two shots on goal through the contest. Anchoring the back line was Michelle Morales, Natalie Muller, Agnes Megerdicians, Julia Marx and Dana Williams.

Burbank continued to play hard in the second half and its efforts finally paid off in the 63rd minute. Taylor Gore broke through to Clarissa Guerrero who beat three defenders and laid the ball off at the 18-yard line where Alessia Dalmonte scored.

In the 70th minute, the Lancers couldn't clear the ball out of their defensive zone and the ball landed at the feet of midfielder Dalmonte, who chipped a shot that sailed 25 yards over the La Salle keeper's head to put the Bulldogs ahead, 2-0.

Burbank goalkeeper Sara Rangwala earned her first shutout of the season.

Burbank 2, Louisville 0: Forward Taylor Gore scored both of the Bulldogs' goals Tuesday to pace the team to a nonleague win at home.

BOYS' SOCCER

South Pasadena 2, Burroughs 1: The Indians gave up two second-quarter goals Friday in suffering a nonleague loss at Luther Burbank Middle School.

Geovanni Medina scored the lone goal for Burroughs.
