Burbank High 3, Hoover, 1: The Bulldogs notched their third straight Pacific League victory with a win Friday at Hoover.
"First and foremost, I applaud Hoover's effort. They gave 110% throughout the game. I have seen a definite improvement in their team since last year," Burbank Coach Eric Montoya said.
Burbank started the offensive attack when forward Clarissa Guerrero won the ball in the midfield, dribbled the through the Hoover defenders and put the ball away for the first goal of the game.
Soon after Hoover's goalkeeper, Yvette Cruz, spent the rest of the first half defending her net.
"Hoover's goalkeeper was a beast in goal today," Montoya said. "She had save after save. We were putting the ball on frame, direct shots, breakaways, she just kept saving them; she played really great".
Hoover launched an offensive attack in beginning of second half, scoring early to tie the score at 1.
However, the Bulldogs were able to regroup. They stepped up and started an offensive run. Alecia Dal Monte, who controlled the midfield most of the game, played a ball to Guerrero who passed the ball across to Taylor Gore who tapped the ball in the net giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Hoover continued to apply pressure which forced Burbank keeper Sara Rangwala to go one-on-one to make a sliding save allowing the Bulldogs to maintain the lead.
In the 70th minute, Dal Monte crossed ball to Guerrero who shot the ball in the corner of the net for the third goal.
"We didn't go into the game expecting an easy win by any means. We knew we were going to be in for a battle. I really have to give the other team credit," Montoya said. "Hoover fought the entire game. I told my team they cannot take any team in the Pacific League for granted."
