Providence win is long in coming

Providence 11, Sherman Indian 1: The Pioneers recorded the program's first win since 2010 with a nonleague victory Tuesday on the road.

Pitcher Aaron Ziegler struck out nine batters in five innings for the mercy-rule victory for Providence (1-1). Anthony Galvan was two for four with two doubles and two runs batted in.

SOFTBALL

Burroughs 2-8, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 1-4: The Indians won both ends of a nonleague doubleheader Wednesday at Olive Park.

In the opener, Burroughs (5-0) opened by scoring two runs in the first inning. Caitlin Loera tripled to give Burroughs an early 1-0 lead and Haley Schulman drove in Loera with a sacrifice fly.

Schulman (4-0) pitched a complete game three-hitter. Loera went two for three.

In the second game, the Indians broke a 4-4 tie by pushing across three runs in the fifth inning, spearheaded by a run-scoring single by Aimee Rodriguez and a two-run double by Megan McKenna.

Pitcher Davina Del Castillo (1-0) started and went five innings for the win.

Burroughs 5, Oaks Christian 4: The Indians came away with a big win Tuesday, defeating the No. 1-ranked Lions at Olive Park.

Oaks Christian took a 2-0 lead, as Burroughs had just one hit though the first three innings.

But the Indians came up with three runs in the fourth, as Aimee Rodriguez lined a single up the middle to score Shannon Trujillo and Megan McKenna lined a two-run double.

The game was 3-2 until the top of the sixth inning when Oaks Christian scored two runs to take a 4-3 lead.

In the sixth inning, Trujillo led off with a mammoth home run to deep center field. That was followed by two straight hits by Rodriguez and Davina Del Castillo. Then, McKenna came through with a single that scored Rodriguez to give Burroughs a 5-4 advantage.

Trujillo was three for three with two runs scored and Rodriguez and McKenna (three runs batted in) had two hits each.

Burbank 6, Chaffey 4: Pitcher Caitlyn Brooks had a good day in the circle as well as at the plate Wednesday to pace the Bulldogs to a win in the Duarte Tournament.

Brooks had six strikeouts and was three for four. Teammate Nalani Hernandez was two for four with a home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored, Lilly Winn had a home run and two walks, Katie Hooper had a triple and catcher Bridgette Pisa picked off two runners for Burbank (1-1).

BOYS' VOLLEYBALL

Burroughs d. Hoover, 25-7, 25-5, 25-10: The two-time defending Pacific League champion Indians opened league with an easy win Tuesday.

Ike Nwachie led the way for Burroughs (7-1) with nine kills. Daniel Jacobs added seven kills, BJ Lagmay had 22 assists and Tristan Martin contributed six aces.

BOYS' TENNIS

Burroughs 18, Pasadena 0: The Indians recorded the easy Pacific League win Tuesday at home.
