The fourth-grade team of Ye Jun Kwon, Jacob Levine, Rushikesh Parde and Anna Tong won a bronze medal in the Computational/Procedural Skills Individual Event.
Softball event helps Family Service
The city of Burbank is hosting a one-day co-ed softball tournament on July 21 in support of the Family Service Agency of Burbank.
The nonprofit organization was established in 1953 and provides low-cost/no-cost professional clinical and psycho-educational services to families in Burbank and its neighboring communities.
The tournament will be played at George Izay Park with a maximum of 16 teams permitted on a first-come, first-serve basis. The team fee is $200 and each player asked to donate household goods on the day of the event that will help families participating in the agency's programs. Animal shelter benefits from game
The softball teams from Burbank High School and John Burroughs vied in a game early in May at McCambridge Park.
They were playing their last season match to establish division placement before heading off to playoffs, as well as collecting items for the Burbank Animal Shelter. Food, toys, blankets and monetary donations were collected. Dogs and kittens that were up for adoption were brought to the game by shelter volunteers to help bring awareness of the Burbank shelter.
Kiwanis Club gives scholarships
The Burbank Kiwanis Club has presented scholarships to local students.
Recipients are, from Muir Middle School: Brian Cook, Emma Kerr and Adam Gross; from Jordan Middle School: Nicholas Apostolina, Julia Vinyard and Noelia Cortes; from Luther Burbank Middle School: Ashley Tran, Ashley Phelps and Griffin Dooley; from Career Assistance: Seda Byurat, Tanya Cruz, Christian Kruchenko and Elizabeth Winning.
Receiving the Don Farquhar Memorial Scholarship was Yuuki Okuda, from Burbank High School.
Burbank student going to West Point
Rep. Adam Schiff has named a Burbank student among five from the 29th Congressional District who have received appointments to U.S. service academies for the class of 2016.
Nathan William Hamming has been appointed to the Military Academy at West Point.
While attending Polytechnic School, Nathan demonstrated his academic achievement, being awarded the AP Scholar award and honor roll in 10th and 11th grades.
