Burbank City Council selects new clerk on June 28

June 22, 2012

In a few days, the City Council will select our next city clerk. The position is an elected office, but the last clerk retired before her term expired.

The council will also appoint the next city treasurer the same day because that official also retired early, in the same time period that, according to city staff, and with the council's concurrence, makes it too confusing and expensive to conduct an election for the term remaining.

Yes, I'm among 10 applicants for the city clerk's position, but I'm just as interested in assuring Burbankers even know it's happening. The meeting is 4 p.m. on June 28, and will be broadcast on Charter Communication's channel 6.

I want people to recognize how important the City Clerk's Office really is. The clerk runs your elections. Among the discretionary powers, he or she can decide whether a precinct ballot recount is necessary. The clerk holds candidates accountable for campaign finance reports, including those required by the state, and a stricter standard under Burbank's campaign finance rules.

I urge you to visit Burbank's website to see all applications for clerk and treasurer.

The applications include email and phone contacts for virtually all of the applicants.
