Roundup: Maemura goes low to pace Burbank golf

GIRLS' GOLF

Burbank 234, Canyon Country Canyon 236: Irene Maemura shot an even-par 31 Monday to pace the Bulldogs to a nonleague win at El Cariso Golf Course.

Burbank also received a 46 from Caitlin McGrath, a 47 from Kaitlin Brooks, a 50 from Alexis Poche and a 60 from Caitlyn Brooks.

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

Milken Community d. Providence, 25-20, 25-23, 25-15: The Pioneers fell in the nonleague contest Tuesday on the road.

Junior outside hitter Lorena Ubillus led the Pioneers (3-2) with four kills and three aces. Junior setter Jennifer Nardoni finished with 13 assists and sophomore libero Nikka Adraneda had 16 digs.

Burbank d. Pasadena, 25-17, 26-24, 25-16: Rose Cowart had 11 kills and seven digs and Allison Tiegs added 11 kills Tuesday to pace the Bulldogs to a Pacific League win.

Sara Treadway had 30 assists and Lily Winn had 14 digs for Burbank (4-3, 1-1 in league).

CROSS-COUNTRY

Burbank in Ojai Invitational: Elliott Choe set a Bulldogs record in the event and placed first in the boys' race in leading his team to a first-place showing Saturday at Lake Casitas.

Burbank athletes captured the first four places in the race.

Choe, a senior, won the Large School race in 15 minutes 56 seconds. Choe was followed closely by Arsen Mkrtchyan (second; 16:10), Ethan Moskowitz (third; 16:15), Enrique Vizcaino (fourth; 16:27) and Andres Vasquez (ninth; 16:51).

In the Large School girls' race, the Bulldogs also had a top finisher in Candela Fernandez, who won the race in 18:42. That was the fastest time ever by a Burbank girl at the event, beating the old mark by more than a minute. Fernandez was followed by Arlette Movsesyan (third; 20:07), Daisy Ignacio (fifth; 20:19), Caroline Adams (seventh; in 21:00), and Stephanie Solomon (15th; 21:46).

Burroughs in Mt. Carmel Invitational (San Diego) Invitational: The Indians took part in the event Saturday at Balboa Park.

In the senior boys' race, Ricky Mendez paced Burroughs, placing 22nd in 16 minutes 35 seconds. He was followed by Everth Vargas (46th; 16:58) and Thomas Switzer (76th; 17:33).

The junior boys enjoyed a fourth-place finish behind Shane Thompson (fifth; 16:07), Garrett Boulais (seventh; 16:1), Elias Hoxsie (ninth; 16:15), Jack Howe (54th; 17:33) and Dion Mokhtari (113th; 18:46).

In the sophomore boys' race, the Indians were fifth behind Adam Villalpando (28th; 17:18), Justin Villagran (31st; 17:24), Manne Green (41st 17:39), Christian Fuentes (56th; 18:05) and Trent Harrison (57th; 18:05).

In the freshman girls' race, Heidi Eligio was 55th in 19:51.

FOOTBALL

Burbank Vikings: Three teams from the local tackle program notched shutout wins Saturday during the fourth week of the season.

Leading the way was Junior Green (4-0), which remained perfect with a 42-0 victory against the Santa Clarita Warriors. Also not allowing any points was Midget Green (4-0) against thee Santa Clarita Seminoles, 38-0, and Bantam White (3-1), which beat the Santa Clarita Indians, 26-0.

Also earning a win was the Pee-Wees, which upended North Oxnard Red, 34-8.

Suffering losses were Senior Black (1-3) against the Santa Clarita Chiefs, 24-22, Senior Green (0-3) against Agoura, 33-14, Junior Black (2-2-0) against Valley, 18-6, Midget Black (2-2) against Palmdale, 38-0, Bantam Black (1-3) against the Santa Clarita Apaches, 16-14, and the Gremlins (0-3-0) against Ventura, 30-8.
