More than 2,000 students have attended the Burbank Nursery School since its 1958 inception, but the school?s core values have remained the same. A small gathering of teachers, students and former students helped celebrate the school?s 50th anniversary Friday. Administrators explained that the school?s strict curriculum of creative arts, dramatic play and playground time distinguishes it from other academic institutions. ?We have stuck to the original philosophy, which is we are a play-based program.

As a licensed psychotherapist and as a human being, I am a big fan of three very magical words: ?I am sorry.? I suggest these words to patients and to friends when I think they are applicable. Well, this approach to people has found its way into the medical profession. For many, many years when a doctor screwed up he immediately followed the standard insurance company advice, which was to ?deny and defend.? For that matter, that is still what most automobile insurance carriers suggest that their clients do if they are involved in an accident.

DAVID SILVA Wading through the endless "year in review" articles in every newspaper and TV news program, I couldn't help but think about my own momentous experiences of 2003. For better or worse, it was a big year for me. I started a new job, lost a roommate but gained a valley, and, perhaps most importantly, finally figured out how to get the DVD player and VCR working as a team. So here it is, my very own "Year in Review": Jan. 1, 2003: I begin the new year filled with high hopes, then suffer an immediate setback when I get stuck in Rose Bowl traffic for two hours.
