Halfway through its fiscal year, Bob Hope Airport's operating revenues are running more than $150,000 in the red due to declining numbers of passengers and weak parking revenues, according to a recent financial report. Parking fees, which make up about 40% of the airport's revenues, were budgeted to bring in $9.5 million but only produced $8.9 million, according to the report released to the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority on Monday. Passenger levels for the first half of the fiscal year - July to December 2012 - declined almost 6.8% compared to the same period in the last fiscal year.

The number of passengers at Bob Hope Airport took a nosedive in January, with a 12% drop compared to last year, leaving some airport staffers feeling like they're a bit under siege. Airport Executive Director Dan Feger paused before starting his report to the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority on Monday to display a Bob Hope Airport version of the famous “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster, which was used by the British government to try and raise morale in advance of German bombardment of major English cities during the World War II. “The news is not very good, it's not a good-news report,” Feger said.

Bob Hope Airport will avoid the impact of $85 billion in automatic federal spending cuts that are slated for midnight Friday -- a move that officials warn will force a scale back in operations at airfields across the nation. A last-minute huddle between President Obama and congressional leaders in the Oval Office Friday morning failed to produce a compromise to forestall the automatic spending cuts all sides say they want to avoid, the L.A. Times reported . The spending cuts, known as sequestration, will impact the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration, which have warned that they will be forced to scale down operations at airports.

Frequent fliers traveling through Bob Hope Airport can now expect an even quicker passage to their gates during certain times of the day. With cooperation from the Transportation Security Administration and funding from Southwest Airlines, the airfield is using an “Experienced Travelers” lane in Terminal A for frequent fliers during peak hours, usually from 6 to 7 a.m. daily. The airport began using an existing lane exclusively for frequent fliers on Feb. 5, said Denis Carvill, a deputy executive director at the airport Airport officials will monitor its use over the next three months, he added.

A U.S. District Court judge has accepted a third amended complaint from a woman who got into a tussle with security officials at Bob Hope Airport when they wouldn't allow her to bring applesauce and other snacks onboard a flight in 2009. Nadine Hays, a Camarillo resident, claims she was taken into custody after the April 2009 incident based on a falsified citizen's arrest form and tampered evidence. U.S. District Court Judge Patrick Walsh said several defendants who have been served, including some airport employees, must now respond to allegations in Hays' complaint - or enter a plea - by March 1. The defendants include Tesia Tettah, the Transportation Security Administration employee with whom Hays allegedly got into a tug-of-war.

Bob Hope Airport is taking a two-path approach to preventing another outage like the one on Nov. 28 that took out operations on its longest runway. The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority on Monday voted to buy an emergency lighting system while officials complete a multimillion-dollar proposal to replace the dated wiring system that caused the outage. “That outage, frankly, was not to the standard that we offer to the traveling public ... it creates havoc for those customers that couldn't fly out of here at night,” said Dan Feger, the airport's executive director.
