Gary Moskowitz GLENDALE -- A Congressional Arts Forum & Competition will showcase artwork from area students next week in Glendale. The competition entries will be on public exhibit from noon to 4 p.m. Monday, May 7, at the Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., and will include Burbank and other area school districts from 7 to 9 p.m. Staff members from the office of U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) will be available to answer questions about federal government issues.

Prince of Persian Pop stops at Alex Theatre GLENDALE -- Andy Madadian, known as the Prince of Persian Pop, will appear at 8 p.m. Sunday at The Alex Theatre in Glendale. He will be debuting songs from his new album "And My Heart ..." on the Mondo Melodia label. He has created a fusion of sounds that combines traditional Middle Eastern instruments with the Western world's drums, bass, guitar and technology. Aside from his Persian-Armenian heritage, Andy combines Arabic melodies with African rhythms, which he seasons with Indian and Spanish flamenco guitar licks and European techno.

Theaters nominated for drama critics awards The Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle has announced its nominations and special awards for excellence in Los Angeles and Orange County theater for 2006. The Margaret Harford Award for sustained excellence in theater will be awarded to the Troubadour Theater Company . The award is accompanied by a $500 check funded by the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Nominated for best Production is "A Man of No Importance," Jill Townsend , Musical Theatre Guild, at the Alex Theatre; T.H. McCulloh Award for Revival, "A Touch of the Poet," A Noise Within; Direction, Nick DeGruccio , "Beehive," Valley Musical Theatre at the El Portal Theatre; Musical Direction, Steven Smith , "A Man of No Importance," Musical Theatre Guild at The Alex Theatre.

Joyce Rudolph, Enjoy! GLENDALE -- Dance programs at The Alex Theatre and throughout the community are getting a boost from members of a growing support group -- Dance Partners at The Alex. It's a chance for lovers of dance to get together socially and support dance events at The Alex, says co-chairwoman Kathleen Elowitt. Starting at a minimum donation of $100, a member receives a 15% discount on all Alex dance performances, invitations to rehearsals and a chance to meet the professionals at post-receptions.

Joyce Rudolph, Weekend GLENDALE -- A special children's introduction to dance is planned during a visit by Les Ballets jazz de Montreal at The Alex Theatre in Glendale. The contemorary ballet ensemble will perform a free 45-minute performance at 2 p.m. today, which is geared to younger audiences, followed by a longer program at 8 tonight. The purpose of the matinee is to give youngsters a taste of what modern ballet is and expose them to the performing arts, said Barry McComb, executive director of The Alex Theatre.

Darleene Barrientos Clutching Miss Thailand's hand, 17-year-old Jennifer Chu of Calabasas clapped her hands together in disbelief when she realized she was named Miss Asia USA 2005 Saturday. The sash representing "Korea" was covered with the sash proclaiming her as "Miss Asia USA 2005," as Angeline Wu, last year's winner, placed a tall crown atop Jennifer's head, and a bouquet of roses was thrust into her arms. "I'm extremely surprised," Jennifer said, smiling for countless pictures.

Joyce Rudolph GLENDALE -- Conductor Jeffrey Kahane and Robert Levin will play Mozart's Concerto No. 10 in E flat for two pianos with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra at 8 p.m. Saturday at The Alex Theatre in Glendale. Pianist Levin, with Music Director Kahane conducting, will also play Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor. Renewing Mozart's improvisational tradition, Levin accepts original ideas from the audience to compose an aural tapestry in front of the audience's eyes and ears.

Spanish ballet at the Alex Theatre Burbank-based Media City Ballet will present "Pasion de Espana" ("Passion of Spain") at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale. Choreographers Askar Kettebekov, director, and Natasha Middleton-Kettebekov, company artistic director, have created a program of Spanish ballet featuring excerpts from "Bolero," "Don Quixote," "Carmen" and "Swan Lake." Executing the dances will be Media City Ballet principal dancers along with advanced students from the company's 2005 Apprentice Summer Intensive.

"It's Magic!," a show starring internationally renowned award-winning magicians, returns Friday for a three-day engagement at The Alex Theatre in Glendale. Dale Hindman is directing this show featuring Mark & Jinger, David and Dania, Ed Alonzo, Jason Latimer, Nick Lewin and James Dimmare, in magical acts ranging from sleight of hand to mind-boggling stage illusions. Mark Kalin & Jinger (Jinger Leigh) won the Magician of the Year award in 1998 from the Academy of Magical Arts.

Joyce Rudolph The holiday season will begin with a blast from more than 300 tubas when the Merry TubaChristmas concert returns Dec. 7 to The Alex Theatre. It's the third year this extraordinary performance will be at The Alex, but the 27th annual event for the group led by Jim Self, said Brian Ellis president of the Alex Film Society and chairman of the TubaChristmas committee for the Glendale Symphony Orchestra Assn. The tradition began when the Glendale Symphony was performing its holiday concerts at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles.
