This is not your parents’ Chinese restaurant. Forget the red vinyl booths, papier-mâché dragons and rice-paper lanterns hanging everywhere. And don’t expect the kitschy plates or pots of tea. It is a minor detail, but it says everything. The fortune cookies are delicious. Instead of the usual break-your-teeth perfunctory after-dinner treat, here they bring fortune cookies wrapped in brightly colored foil that are fresh and have been partially dipped in white chocolate.

For those of you who were disappointed when the old Bob’s Big Boy on Glenoaks closed, take heart. The new Glenoaks Cafe offers a similar American diner experience. For those who never thought Bob’s was all that great, take heart. . .  you’re vindicated. The new place offers a similar American diner experience. The owners are the same as when it was Bob’s. They chose to cancel their franchise renewal because they wanted to be free of corporate regulations.

Diners are the kind of eateries that appeal to the masses — folks looking for home-style cooking at an affordable price, parties of one who prefer the counter space for easier newspaper perusal and the bedraggled likes of those who over-indulged the night before, looking for the perfect greasy dish to sop up their alcoholic excess. You don’t have to drive too far around Glendale or Burbank to spot these greasy spoons, a distinction more charming than disparaging in today’s culinary terminology.

Healthy BitesAmong the world's cuisines, a Mediterranean diet is often cited as one of the healthiest. With an emphasis on fresh ingredients, savory herbs and spices, citrus juices and olive oil, it's also one of the most delicious. At Healthy Bites, you can sample these wonderful flavors and know you're treating your body right too. The restaurant occupies a narrow storefront where everything is made to go, a fact made plain by the obvious lack of seating. Healthy Bites opens early and offers a variety of espresso drinks, coffee, tea, pastries, bagels and croissants.

Bill Scollon I'm the first to admit I'm not passionate about sushi, but there are times I get a yen for it. And while there are several good sushi places in town, I enjoy going to a small, unpretentious restaurant tucked into a strip mall called Sushi Dake. And though it does crack me up that the restaurant is next to a tropical fish store, I can assure you there's no connection. Sitting at the sushi bar gives you a front-row seat to watch the sushi chefs artfully prepare dishes.

If you're looking for health-conscious Mexican food, stop in for a taste at Santa Fe Café. The counter-service café uses fresh ingredients and heart-friendly oils to prepare a full board of Mexican specialties. Tacos here are well made with savory meats, cheese and lettuce. But there's a twist ? the taco shell is dusted with Parmesan cheese. The sharp cheese nicely complements the traditional taco ingredients. To go with it, or anything else on the menu, Santa Fe offers a fresh salsa bar with a nice variety of color, chunkiness and degrees of heat.

Fruits from the tropics ? guava, mango, pineapple and banana ? inspire the name of the Paradise Juice & Deli, a petite eatery tucked into a row of businesses on Riverside Drive. Fresh-squeezed juices, Hawaiian shakes and smoothies top a menu that also includes sandwiches and salads. It's refreshing to find a local independent business making a go of it against juice and smoothie giants like Jamba and Robek's. And refreshing just begins to describe the delicious drinks to be enjoyed at Paradise.

Summer is burger season, but frankly, this summer is shaping up to be nearly too hot to fire up the grill. If you are hankering for a hamburger, but can't bear the thought of burning your own briquettes, head out to The Habit Burger Grill in Glendale. It's cool as an ice cream soda inside, with a buzz of conversation and the aroma of the grill filling the air-conditioned air. Choices are the classic burger-fries-and-soda combos, with a smattering of grilled sandwiches and salads.

Los Gringos LocosTacos, tostadas, fajitas, oh my! Just because it's "gringo" food doesn't mean it can't be tasty, fresh and fun. Los Gringos Locos in La Cañada Flintridge is a popular spot for just this reason, serving up California versions of Mexican favorites in a cheerful atmosphere. The folk-art painted walls create a seaside village feeling that is definitely family friendly. Oilcloth-covered tables and crayons add to the welcome, and the place is just noisy enough to invite smaller diners.
