Irma Lemus The Burbank Unified School District released its 1999-2000 Stanford 9 Achievement test scores Friday. The standardized exam is given to public school students in grades 2-11 each spring. Elementary and middle school students are tested in reading, math, language and spelling. High School students are tested in reading, math, language, science and social science. The scores are the cumulative average by grade based on a 100-point scale, with 50 set as the statewide average.

ON THE AGENDA The following items are scheduled to be discussed at Thursday night’s Burbank Unified School District board meeting: Supt. Gregory Bowman will present the board with a recommendation for a new assistant principal at Joaquin Miller Elementary School. The positions was left open this school year when the former Assistant Principal Sandra Cavalheiro left to take the principal position at Walt Disney Elementary School. WHAT TO EXPECT The board will most likely approve the appointment, but this approval is pending the prospective employee passing through all clearances.

A Burbank Unified School District teacher turned herself in Monday for having sex with a 14-year-old student from March to September last year, police said. Amy Beck, 33, a sixth-grade teacher at Jordan Middle School, surrendered Monday afternoon to Burbank police with her lawyer, and was being held on $400,000 bail, Burbank Police Sgt. Robert Quesada said. “We’re still trying to piece everything together, what happened, where, what kind of sex acts, how many, and how long it’s been going on,” he said.

CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES' WEEK LIKELY COMING A resolution declaring May 15 through May 21, 2005 as a week to acknowledge classified employees.

OWEN AND CAROL CLARKE Owen and Carol Clarke celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by family and friends at a dinner party at Genio's Restaurant. The couple have lived in Burbank for 49 years. Those attending the anniversary party were their eldest daughter, Susan, and her husband, Jef Vander Borght; another daughter, Bonnie Adkins; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kelli Clarke; longtime friends, Dorothy Gallup and Nancy Strasser; Carol's sister, Claudia Stiver; and their grandchildren, Jill, Kary and Kyle Vander Borght, Jef Radino and Amy and Erin Clarke.

--Irma Lemus BURBANK -- The Burbank Unified School District was awarded $50,000 to upgrade school playgrounds with equipment made of recycled materials. The district received two $25,000 grants from the California Integrated Water Management Board, part of the California Environmental Protection Agency, on Nov. 14. The money will be used to replace dilapidated playground fixtures with equipment made of recycled materials such as plastic, aluminum and rubber.
