NORWALK ? She'll remember the two Foothill League championships. She'll recall setting a personal-best mark of 11 feet 3 in Santa Barbara. And she'll think of her league record-setting mark of 11-1. When Burbank High girls' pole vaulter Ginny English looks back on her high school career, the senior will think of the fond memories in her stellar tenure. Her experience at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championships on Saturday might be soon cleared from her memory bank, though.

Jeff Tully BURROUGHS HIGH -- Burroughs High track and field co-Coach John Peebles had a little agreement with Indian junior runner Carolyn Brown a few days before the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet. If the middle-distance runner qualified for the CIF-State Track and Field Preliminaries in the 800 meters, Peebles promised he would bleach his brown hair blond. Thanks to a fine performance by Brown Friday at Cerritos College, Peebles showed up Tuesday for his classes at Burroughs with a new golden hairdo.

BELLARMINE-JEFFERSON HIGH -- Pharrin Lewis wasn't involved in sports when she first came to Bellarmine-Jefferson High. "I a lot of people don't know this, but Pharrin started out as a cheerleader for us, and she wasn't involved in athletics," Bell-Jeff Athletic Director Bryan Camacho said. "But we could see she was a good athlete, so we begged her to come out and play sports for us." That encouragement led Lewis to become a fine two-sport athlete for the Guards.

WALNUT — At this point in the track and field season, Burroughs High senior Sadee Martinez enters each race knowing it could be her last. With each week the competition becomes increasingly more difficult, and when blazing heat is added to the equation, continuing to prolong a season with solid races can become a dicey proposition. But Martinez was up the challenge on Saturday, as she battled through heat in the high 90s to finish in fifth place in the Division I girls’ 1,600-meters race in 4 minutes, 59.79 seconds at the Division I CIF Southern Section Track and Field Finals at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.

NORWALK -- For Kyle Ivie and Carolyn Brown, running in Saturday's CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championship was probably the least stressful aspect of their respective days at Cerritos College's Falcon Stadium. It was during lengthy waiting periods on the infield grass following their races in the Division II final that the nerves and tension began to mount for two of the area's most celebrated athletes. Ivie was admittedly more confident than Brown, as the Burbank senior knew that despite finishing fourth in a loaded boys' 1,600-meter field, he had almost assured himself a spot for Friday's Master's Meet -- the top nine competitors in Southern California -- at Cerritos College.

Chris Morris tried to calm himself as he walked onto the track at Cerritos College. As he glanced around at his competition, he became increasingly more uneasy. As a wide-eyed sophomore, the Burroughs High sprinter had not idea what was in store for him in the boys? 400-meter race at the Division II CIF Southern Section Track and Field Finals last season. ?I was nervous even before I got into the blocks for the race,? Morris said. ?I was in the finals, and I didn?t know how I was going to do.?

BURBANK — With Greg Dotson running some of the fastest times in the nation this season in the boys' 800 meters, many figured the Burbank High senior would go deep into the track and field postseason. However, the question persisted: Could another area athlete find continued success alongside Dotson? That question was answered Saturday in the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championships at Cerritos College. Not only was Dotson able to do well and qualify for Friday's CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College, but he will be joined at the competition by Burroughs High sophomore Anthony Monroy, who is moving on in the boys' 3,200.

CERRITOS ? Entering Friday night?s CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College, Burroughs High senior Sadee Martinez knew it was going to take a personal-record effort to carry her through to next week?s CIF-California State Track and Field Championships. The field in the girls? 1,600 meters was stacked with talented distance runners, and the at-large mark she needed to advance was a second better than her previous best time. None of that seemed to faze Martinez, however, as she entered confident and up for the challenge.
