BURBANK ? Ginny English will again be all by herself at the CIF Southern Section final. The senior girls' pole vaulter from Burbank High will be the lone local representative in the Division II track and field competition Saturday at Cerritos College. English vaulted herself into the final by going 10 feet 6 in Saturday's CIF Southern Section preliminaries at Moorpark High. It is her second straight year making the final. A two-time defending league champion, English's personal best is 11-3 and she won the league this season with a record-setting mark of 11-1.

Jeff Tully Bellarmine-Jefferson High has two double threats in track and field. The Guards have two athletes who qualified in two events each in the Southern Section Division V preliminaries Saturday at Carpinteria High. They will join one competitor from Burroughs and one from Burbank in Saturday's final at Cerritos College. Leading the way for Bell-Jeff is senior boys' distance runner Gerad Herkey. Herkey finished fourth in the 800-meter preliminary race in 2 minutes 1.14 seconds and was sixth in the 1,600 in 4:31.

Jeff Tully BURBANK -- When Tony Ahr was a freshman, he ran the hurdles for the Burroughs High track and field team. With mixed results, Ahr, with the help of his coaches, decided to switch to the distance events. Since then, the senior has been burning up the track for the Indians. Friday, in the Foothill League finals at College of the Canyons in Valencia, Ahr captured league championships in the 800- and 1,600-meter events to lead a field of 25 area athletes into the CIF Southern Section preliminaries.

BURBANK — Athletes braved hot conditions at the CIF Southern Section Division I preliminaries Saturday at Trabuco Hills High in Mission Viejo. Going up against some of the top athletes in Southern California, four boys — three from Burroughs and one from Burbank — were able to keep their season moving forward. Indians Chris Morris, Western Nelson and Jeff Dumas, along with Burbank’s Greg Dotson, did well in the meet and qualified for next Saturday’s Division I finals at Cerritos College.

James Knowles' speed was a boon throughout the season for the St. Francis High track and field team, as he quickly cleared every hurdle en route to consistently winning the 110- and 300-meter hurdle races. Long before the first meet in early March, Knowles' confidence level had surged after putting in countless hours training and conditioning for both events so that he would be in line for a potential banner season. Knowles played a large role in making the Golden Knights one of the top teams in the ultra-competitive Mission League.

Bits and pieces from the local sports scene:   Trio invited to play one more high school game : Two seniors from Burroughs High and one from Burbank will get a chance to strap on the pads for a game this weekend. Indians Dalton Williams and Charlie Hosea , along with Bulldog Zach Wilke , will take part in the inaugural Sports Scholarships USA City vs. CIF High School All-Star Game. The contest will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at Birmingham High.

NORWALK ? Western Nelson?s season was already long since over at this time last year. The Burroughs High senior never made it to the CIF prelims as a junior, much less to the CIF State Meet. But that?s exactly where Nelson is headed after a breakout fourth-place finish in 9 minutes 4.19 seconds at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet Friday night at Cerritos College. Fifth place was the cutoff for advancement to state. ?After last year, it?s a quantum leap, I?m pretty happy with it,?

NORWALK — Thanks to a much-needed last-second push, Sadee Martinez can look forward to heading to Sacramento. Martinez, a Burroughs High junior distance runner, needed every ounce of energy to cross the finish line and accomplish a remarkable feat. Martinez set a personal record of 4 minutes 58.82 seconds in the girls' 1,600 meters Friday at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College in Norwalk to earn a spot in the coveted CIF State Track and Field Meet.

BURBANK — Sadee Martinez is definitely making the most of her junior season at Burroughs High. Earlier in the school year, Martinez became the first cross-country runner in program history to qualify for the CIF-State Cross-Country Championships. Martinez accomplished another impressive feat on Saturday. With a fine effort in the CIF Southern Section Finals at Cerritos College in Norwalk, she qualified for Friday's Masters Meet at the same venue. Martinez turned in the 11th-best time in the Division II girls' 1,600 meters in 4 minutes 58.99 seconds.

SWIMMING CIF Southern Section Division I preliminaries: Burroughs High's Olga Sepa and a relay team from Burbank had fine outings in the event Wednesday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. The freshman from Estonia had personal-best efforts in the girls' 200-yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke. In both events, Sepa finished 17th, just missing qualifying for the championship heat or the consolation final, where the top 16 get automatic berths.
