Thrift shop gets close-up on show La Providencia Guild of Childrens Hospital Thrift Shop was included in a segment of Mayor Gary Bric’s BTV6 show, “Mayor on the Street,” when he visited the Burbank Boulevard merchants. Sharon Terranova , president, and Dolly Monte , second vice president and the thrift shop chairwoman, explained how all members volunteer hours for the operation of the Childrens Hospital Thrift Shop. Members also design displays in the store’s windows that receive compliments from the shop’s neighbors.

Carly Fiorina, Meg Whitman and even Sen. Scott Brown — the Republican who shocked the political world in January by winning the Massachusetts Senate seat long held by Ted Kennedy — have walked into a Magnolia Boulevard headquarters for the Republican Party of California this year. "That just doesn't happen," said Jane Barnett, chairwoman of the Los Angeles County Republican Committee. "Not in L.A. " Barnett said Meg Whitman has visited the Southland more than 60 times.

Ceramic artists are making a statement with their pottery pieces while raising funds to help homeless families. The third annual Empty Bowl fundraiser benefits Family Promise of the East San Fernando Valley. The event is from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. June 2 at the First United Methodist Church of Glendale, 134 N. Kenwood St., Glendale. Proceeds provide safe shelter, meals and support to homeless families. Area artists are creating one-of-a-kind bowls and donating them to the fundraiser.

Roz Teller, a local Democratic activist, died Aug. 31 after a short battle with lung cancer. She was a member of the Los Angeles Democratic Party Central Committee, serving on the resolutions and judicial interview committees. She was also a member of the California Democratic Party Executive Board and the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley, serving as the credentials chairwoman. Last year, she was named a Democratic Volunteer of the Year. Professionally, Teller was a consultant to nonprofit organizations.

Everything about doll collecting will be under one roof today when the Jewel City Doll Club presents its 29th annual Doll Show and Sale at the Glendale Civic Auditorium. People come to purchase dolls from the 80 dealers selling everything from antique dolls — which are 100 years old or more — to modern ones, said Peggy Viskocil, the club's publicity chairwoman. Others are looking to find items for dolls in their collections, like wigs, clothes and accessories.

Liz Reynolds was surprised when Las Candelas presented her with the Life Member Award. Reynolds has been a member of Las Candelas since 1992 and has served as president, treasurer, chairwoman of Hillsides activities, and served a two-year term at the Hillsides Store. Hillsides is a residential treatment facility in Pasadena for emotionally disturbed children. Reynolds was chairwoman of the Camarillo State facility when Las Candelas worked with the children there before it closed.

Terry Campbell was installed as president of the Providence St. Joseph Medical Center Guild during a recognition and installation tea at Lakeside Golf Club. Julie McArdle, outgoing president, conducted the event and introduced Arnold Schaffer, newly appointed chief operating officer, Providence Health System, Southern California Region; Patrick Petre, medical center administrator; and Sister Mary Prendergast. During the event, McArdle presented Schaffer with a check for $187,000 toward the guild's $1-million pledge for the Integrated Cancer Center.
