VNACare earns $27,875 for home health care A total of $27,875 was raised Oct. 18 during VNACare's 60th anniversary party at which 160 revelers dined, danced and played casino games at Pasadena's historic Castle Green Hotel. Those honored during the evening were Arnold von Massenhausen, who received the Patrick Liddell Award; Ken Scott, the Volunteer of the Year Award; and Nora Derian, a registered nurse, the Employee of the Year Award. Swinging rhythms of Park Avenue West helped couples maintain a steady beat across the dance floor.

PANHELLENIC PRESENTS SCHOLARSHIPS Members of the Glendale/Burbank Area Alumnae Panhellenic, a nonprofit organization consisting of national Panhellenic member sorority alumnae women, have presented the winners of their 2005 scholarship awards. Awards are given annually to eligible area high school senior girls planning to attend a four-year college or university, as well as eligible area college women who are active members in good standing of a national Panhellenic (NPC) sorority.

Top volunteer given Service to Mankind Award Elaine Paonessa, a resident of Burbank for 51 years and a longtime community volunteer, recently received the Regional "Service to Mankind Award" from the Sertoma International Organization at its regional convention. She has served as a member of the Foothill Civitan Club, Zonta Club of Burbank Area, Burbank Civic Light Opera, Ota Sister City Committee and Women's Council of Burbank. She is president of SERVE, a support group of the Providence St. Joseph Foundation, which she founded in 1983.

A group of volunteers with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is compiling a resource booklet on services available to military veterans in Burbank. Judy Pike is chairwoman of the Volunteers for Veterans and their Families. The purpose of the group is to identify the services available to men and women of all ages who have returned to civilian life after serving their country. “We want to find out what is missing and be able to provide that in our community,” Pike said.

Mark R. Madler When Burbank on Parade steps off this morning, what the audience will see is the culmination of nine months of work from its chairwoman and a 30-member committee. Chairwoman Joanne Miller said she and the committee work to put together a parade that they and the city can be proud of. "I find joy in the happiness it brings to the citizens of our tight-knit community," Miller said. A business owner and mother of three, Miller has been Burbank on Parade chairwoman since 1987, just two years after becoming involved with the organizing committee.

Republican Women salute fashion The North Hollywood Republican Women Federated will salute the world of fashion at the "Star Spangled Fashions" gala on May 11 at the Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City. This year's show will feature spring fashions from Draper's and Damon's. The president is Virginia Sardi of Toluca Lake and the chairwoman is Irene Metzger of West Toluca Lake. Mildred Simic of Burbank is decorations chairwoman. The boutique offering clothing and accessories by area vendors begins at 10:30 a.m. Luncheon begins at noon followed at 1 p.m. by the fashion show.

Lolita Harper GLENDALE -- When the Alex Theatre first opened in 1925, Americans were riding high after World War I, still in the midst of prohibiton and enthralled by Vaudeville. Although times and trends have changed, the Alex Theatre has proved its staying power in the entertainment culture, concluding the finale of its 75-year anniversary Sunday by raising money for the next 75 years. Community supporters gathered for cocktails and dinner to kick off the Alex Theatre's Endowment Fund at Giggles Nightclub, before a special tribute to Steve Allen at the theater.

La Providencia Guild 's 66th annual fashion show on Oct. 20 at the Sheraton Universal Hotel should be the social event of the fall season. The guild raises funds for Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the current project is the Associates Endowment to Advance Developmental Neuroscience at the hospital. The invitation's cover deliciously illustrates the theme, “Sweet Charity - Giving Never Tasted So Good!,” with a whimsical strawberry milkshake drawn by Edgar, an 8-year-old patient at Children's Hospital.

It has been an annual harbinger of the holiday season - a tradition that separates the first 10 months of a year from the festivities and family gatherings of its last eight weeks. As they have done for many years since their 1947 establishment, the women of the La Providencia Guild of Children's Hospital Los Angeles once again presented their fall boutique, fashion show and luncheon fundraiser this past week at the Sheraton Universal Hotel. Presented under the theme, A Royal Affair, more than 350 guild members and supporters were welcomed by the event's chairwoman, Judy LaVerde, and the organization's president, Judy Gragg, who thanked the assemblage for their continued support of the Los Angeles-based pediatric hospital.
