Chris Morris tried to calm himself as he walked onto the track at Cerritos College. As he glanced around at his competition, he became increasingly more uneasy. As a wide-eyed sophomore, the Burroughs High sprinter had not idea what was in store for him in the boys? 400-meter race at the Division II CIF Southern Section Track and Field Finals last season. ?I was nervous even before I got into the blocks for the race,? Morris said. ?I was in the finals, and I didn?t know how I was going to do.?

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL Burroughs d. Bellarmine- Jefferson, 25-19, 25-20, 25-12 : The Indians opened the season in winning fashion Wednesday with a nonleague victory against the Guards at home. Josh Marbach had 11 kills, three digs and two blocks, Adam Camesa had 22 assists and two aces, Chris Smith had four kills and one block and Karlo Pozos had nine digs for Burroughs. Golden Valley d. Burbank, 25-15, 25-10, 25-16 : Paul Estagle had five kills for the Bulldogs on Wednesday in a season-opening nonleague match.

BASEBALL Burbank 6, Arcadia 4 : McCauley Taylor pitched a complete game Tuesday to lead the Bulldogs to a Pacific League win on the road. Eight of the nine Burbank players had at least one hit. Brandon Dawson went three for four and Chase Mersola reached base four times. Brandon Zepeda had two triples in helping the Bulldogs hammer out 12 hits.   SOFTBALL Burbank 10, Arcadia 2 : Kassy Uchida was three for three with three runs batted in and Megan Schafer was two for four with four RBI to lead the Bulldogs to a Pacific League win Tuesday.

•  WHEN : 7:30 p.m. Friday. •  WHERE : Memorial Field. •  RECORD S : The Indians and Bulldogs are both 3-6, 3-3 in the Pacific League. •  LAST WEEK : Burroughs defeated Arcadia, 16-10; Burbank defeated Hoover, 52-14. •  LAST YEAR : The Indians defeated the Bulldogs, 24-6. •  OUTLOOK : The importance of the annual cross-town rivalry game is pretty cut and dry. Both teams need to win to keep their playoff hopes alive and hopefully earn the fourth-place spot in league.

SOFTBALL Burroughs 7, Oaks Christian 0 : The Indians came up with one of the biggest upsets in program history Wednesday with a win against the Lions in a Birmingham Tournament game at Olive Park. "This was the best game we have played all season. I am so proud of these girls," said Burroughs Coach Nick Schepperle, whose team is 8-8. "If we can play like this all the time, there is no team we can't beat." Oaks Christian (18-2) is in first place in the Tri-Valley League (7-0)
