GLENDALE — Ninth-graders in Glendale and Burbank schools improved their scores on state physical fitness exams, according to figures released Monday. About 82% of Glendale freshmen reached five of six state standards for fitness last school year, an increase from 80.7% in 2007-08, according to the California Department of Education. The exams test students’ aerobic capability, body mass, flexibility, abdominal strength, upper-body muscles and trunk extensions, or stomach-down sit-ups.

BURBANK — Michael Bertram is leaving the Burbank Unified School District to take a new position as assistant principal at Glendale High School. Bertram served for seven years as assistant principal at Burbank High and is credited for raising student test scores and the school’s overall “academic rigor,” Principal Bruce Osgood said. “He is in education for the right reasons. He loves kids and he is very good at what he does. He is the very best,” Osgood said.

Crescenta Valley High School out-cooked eight other high schools Friday in a chili-making showdown at Glendale Community College, serving up what event organizers hope will be a yearly culinary competition. Russel Gruener, 18, a bistro class student at Crescenta Valley High, speculated on what set his team's recipe apart. "I think it's because we have barbecue sauce," he said. "We also have sirloin beef in ours instead of like some kind of pot roast or ground beef." The Crescenta Valley team's presentation — with white table cloths and a snowy antarctic theme — and its chili stood out enough to win the Grand Prize.

Goodbye, 2006. Hello, 2007. Oh yes, what a year it was — the good, the bad and the ugly. And there was some of each in 2006. Elections brought a new crop of legislators to the area. Burbank saw a return of the popular Burbank on Parade back after a year's hiatus. Brand Boulevard in Glendale finished an extensive face-lift, work on the Americana at Brand began, and a Glendale woman's gift of more than $1 million led to a new field at Crescenta Valley High School for generations of students to benefit from.

Christen Nausha, the bride's sister, was the maid of honor. The bridesmaids were the groom's sisters, Jill Vander Borght and Kary Vander Borght, Tatiana Velasquez, and the bride's cousin Megan Bennett. The flower girl was Erin Clarke and junior bridesmaid was Sydney Acosta. The best man was Kevin Habitz.

SALGADO ? YOUNG Valerie Salgado and Jonathan Young , both of Astoria, N.Y., have announced their engagement. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Cesar and Michele Salgado of La Cañada Flintridge. She graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 2000 and UC Irvine in 2004, where she majored in dance. She is co-founder of Foothill Hoops Basketball League in New York and is director of Kids in Sports New York. The groom-elect is the son of Robert and Anne Young of Glendale.

The third competes on the tennis court and in academic quizzes. Mkrtich Ohanyan of Clark Magnet High School, Polet Bagatourian of Crescenta Valley High School and Andrew Bagwell of Hoover High School all seniors, all received the honor making them eligible for $1,000 scholarships. Only about 15,000 students of the 1.3 million who apply for the scholarship program are named finalists by the nonprofit Illinois-based National Merit Scholarship Corp.
