Snuggled up to a palm tree on West Alameda Avenue in Burbank sits a mailbox disguised as a droid. Star Wars-themed mailboxes like the R2-D2 boxes in front of NBC and Warner Bros. studios in Burbank were put out March 16 as a promotion for a 30-year anniversary Star Wars commemorative stamp from the U.S. Postal Service. There are 400 R2-D2 boxes in 200 cities across the nation serving as fully functional mailboxes. But the drop-off box on Alameda isn't being used that much at all, said letter carrier Harold Maxham.

Fine folks of Burbank, you should stand a little taller and feel a little prouder. In January, we proposed the program "Hands Across the Battlefield" to adopt soldiers defending our freedoms. Through your donations and concern for our program, we have now shipped approximately 250 pounds of material to our servicemen and women in Qatar and Afghanistan. GLENDALE ? Facing the Burbank Major All-Star softball team meant that Cece Martinez needed to be disciplined. Listening to one of her teammates helped Martinez, a center fielder on Crescenta Valley, succeed in one of the biggest games in her career. Martinez finished with three hits ? including a solo home run ? and teammates Maddalena Polizzotto and Delaney Gay contributed three hits, as well, on Wednesday night to power Crescenta Valley to an 8-6 victory against Burbank in the Little League District 16 if-necessary championship game at Scholl Canyon Park.

The recently erected statue at Five Points has truly inspired me . . . to think about some of the other truly lame, artistically challenged eyesores around town! Here’s what I found one afternoon: 1. What’s with these lame-o banners all over the place? “Come Out & Play,” “Come Out & Dine,” “Newer Than Ever,” “Cooler Than Ever,” “Dumber Than Ever!” Do they think we’re complete idiots?

Edward Han Thanks to the work of Lowry Digital Images, movie buffs can soon watch C-3PO and R2-D2 squabble in all their digitally remastered glory. The original "Star Wars" trilogy is the latest project that has been completed by the Burbank-based company that restores and remasters classic films. John Lowry, CEO of Lowry Digital Images, started the company in 1998. With two people and 12 computers, the company took 3 1/2 months to transfer the Alfred Hitchcock classic "North by Northwest" to DVD, and the response was so great that the company instantly made a name for itself.
