LOS ANGELES — Over the course of this season, Jorge Chaidez has been asked to play like Superman for the Bellarmine-Jefferson High football team. In nearly every instance, he's delivered. In the biggest game of the season, on the road, with the Guards' playoff hopes riding on a victory, the junior running back again showed why he's the team's most potent, and reliable, weapon. Toting the ball 25 times, Chaidez pulled off an efficient, game-high 181-yard performance with one touchdown, helping Bell-Jeff crash into the postseason with an impressive 21-0 Santa Fe League triumph against Daniel Murphy Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Field at Rancho Cienega Park.

Jeff Tully Harout Messrelian almost didn't stick it out as a basketball player for the Providence High boys' team his freshmen season, because he didn't know if he had enough time to devote to the sport. Three years later, the senior Pioneer standout has become one of the best players in school history. Unfortunately, Messrelian's fine career came to an end Friday, as the Pioneers fell to L.A. Daniel Murphy, 72-58, in a CIF Southern Section Division IVAA second-round game at Providence.

Jeff Tully LOS ANGELES -- For his team's game against L.A. Salesian High, Bellarmine-Jefferson boys' basketball Coach Eli Essa chose to start a group of seniors who have seen limited playing time. Although it may have been a tribute to the dedication of his reserves, the move almost backfired, as the Guards fell behind early Monday and had to claw their way back for a 60-59 Santa Fe League win at Salesian. "Our real senior night is [tonight] in our game against Daniel Murphy at home," Essa said.

If the Bellarmine-Jefferson High football team needed a reason to prove last season's 2-7 mark was an aberration, the team received it with the Aug. 23 passing of Daniel Diaz, 22, a former lineman and linebacker. The season has been dedicated to the memory of the former player, and with that in mind, the team ventured off and played a Zero Week nonleague game against host Malibu Saturday. "This is a terrible shock to all of us," said Bell-Jeff Coach Rolando Aguirre, whose team won its opener, 20-14.
