BURBANK HIGH - It has been nine years since the Burbank boys' cross-country team qualified for the CIF-State Cross-Country Championships. On that team in 2002, the Bulldogs possessed a strong duo of Kyle Ivie and Stratos Christianakis. Behind the talented pair, Burbank finished eighth out of 23 teams in the Division II race, recording 214 points and clocking a team time of 81 minutes 59 seconds on the Woodward Park course in Fresno. The effort was even more impressive for the Bulldogs - who clocked 82:16 to take sixth in the division at the 2000 state meet and 21st out of 101 teams, regardless of division - considering they clocked 84:36 on the same course a month earlier in the Clovis Invitational.

Being a celebrated middle-distance runner, one might think Greg Dotson would cringe at the mention of running long-distance races. Moreover, it would be expected that the Burbank High standout would shudder at the suggestion of taking to the track as a sprinter. However, Dotson, who just finished his senior season, is a rare breed. Not only does the champion 800-meter runner actually enjoy distance running, he also jumps at the chance to compete in the sprints. "I really got more into the [1,600]

OLIVE PARK — For most of the Hap Minor Baseball season, players were mainly concerned with team-orientated goals, like winning divisional titles. But at the 54rd annual Burbank Civitan Club Baseball Jamboree, it was a time for individual accomplishments in the Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services event Saturday at Olive Park. The day of events marked the end of the season for the city's premiere baseball league. Nearly 500 players from 41 teams took part.

It looks as if the local track and field teams will have strong representation this season in the middle- and long-distance events. Leading the way are seniors Greg Dotson and McKenzie Paul from Burbank High and sophomore Anthony Monroy of Burroughs. Monroy is coming off a cross-country season in which he earned All-Area Male Runner of the Year accolades and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Finals. Paul is the reigning Pacific League girls’ 800-meter champion and Dotson won the boys’ 800 title and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Master’s Meet.

GLENDALE — To say Jeff Nelson’s distance-running exploits will live on in area lore would be an understatement. They already do, but if there was any doubt, it will be subsided in the next eight months. For the second time, Nelson will find his way into the Glendale Community College Athletic Hall of Fame. The honor will come seven months removed from him being enshrined into the Burbank High Hall of Fame as part of its first-ever class. For Nelson, a cross-country standout, he will be inducted into the GCC Hall for Outstanding Athletic Achievement, two years removed from getting inducted as part of the state-champion 1980 cross-country squad.
