Members and guests of Burbank Elks Lodge 1497 tipped their hats adieu to 2010 and rang in 2011 in true Hollywood style on New Year's Eve. Larry G. Voorhees Larry G. Voorhees, 80, died Oct. 8, 2004, in Panama City, Calif. He was born Aug. 17, 1924, in Corning, N.Y., and was a 20-year Burbank resident. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a graduate of USC, and worked in swimming pool maintenance. He is survived by his wife, Joan Voorhees; daughter Heidi Walter; and grandson, Jack Walter. Memorial services are 12:30 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church of North Hollywood, 4390 Colfax Ave, Studio City.

Burbank Service Clubs Burbank Elks honor one of their own The Burbank Elks are honoring longtime lodge secretary Vivian Tracy with a retirement party Aug. 10. After nearly 30 years of service to the local organization, Tracy is retiring. Although club members have come and gone, she has been an institution and helped many new exalted rulers ease into office. The retirement party will begin at 6 p.m., and $15 donations can be paid at the door.

RALPH GONZALEZ Ralph Gonzalez died July 20, 2002, in Los Angeles. Born in Culver City, he lived in Burbank for 25 years. He was a maintenance technician for Newell Manufacturing for 35 years. Mr. Gonzalez is survived by his wife, Chantal Raub Gonzalez; his mother, Juanita F. Gonzalez; and daughters, Lisa, Jessica and Lydia. Funeral services were July 26 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Burbank Congregation. Eckerman-Heisman Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

The Verdugo Glen Chapter of the American Business Women's Assn. is hosting its second "Heart of Business Expo" to help women build a successful career. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Glendale Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado St. The chapter designed this expo to offer a learning experience and provide a networking opportunity for women in the community, promote members' businesses and recruit new members, said member Lynn Shelby of Burbank. “Our chapter vision is that we are committed to supporting and developing each other to be successful in our industries and the community,” she said.

The Verdugo Glen chapter of the American Business Women's Assn. has named Arpa Shahijanian of Burbank, a business student at Glendale Community College, as the recipient of a national $1,000 scholarship. This year's scholarship was named in memory of Laurali Fey of Glendale, a longtime member. Arpa was selected by the association's Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational Trustees for her academics, extracurricular activities, work experience and future goals. At Glendale Community College, she is vice president of finance for the Associated Students, on the Dean's Honors List and in the State Honor Society.

Area athlete shows off his skills at basketball competition: Local Resident Nicholas Ryan Black made 20 of 25 free-throw attempts to win his age group at the Burbank Elks Lodge No. 1497 Hoop Shoot competition. The 9-year-old athlete was awarded a trophy and had to wait until neighboring jurisdictions completed their competitions to see if the McKinley Elementary Student would be moving on. Black was informed that he will be advancing, as he will take part in the Metropolitan District Hoop Shoot, to be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Lawrence Middle School in Chatsworth.
