Gary Moskowitz RANCHO DISTRICT -- Roz Cannon became a flag historian -- unintentionally -- about 40 years ago, when her husband, Bill, took over a failing business and told her he needed a partner. Cannon, the smarts behind the stitches at the James E. Perry Co. Flag Headquarters in Burbank since 1960, said Flag Day this year was just like Flag Day every year. Dull. "Nothing really happened for us for Flag Day," said Cannon, who among other things does all the research necessary to reproduce historically accurate flags for films and television programs.

Lolita Harper RANCHO DISTRICT -- With Flag Day being celebrated Thursday, Burbank resident Genevieve Cadmus thinks this is the perfect opportunity to remind people of the proper way to honor the flag. At a meeting of the La Cadena's Women's Group on Tuesday, Cadmus handed out fliers with suggested protocol on how to display the United States flag. The flag represents a living country and is considered a living thing, emblematic of the respect and pride that we have for our nation, the flier read.

Jerry Lane Things change, and as they change, our way of living and doing things change, too. I can remember when every house had a fixture on its front to hold a flag. Flags were flown on all our special days: Flag Day, Armistice Day, Decoration Day, Independence Day, Washington's Birthday, Lincoln's Birthday. Not to put the flag out on those days was unheard of. What would your neighbors think? Getting kids ready for the holiday involved telling stories of heroic deeds and singing of patriotic songs.

Gary Moskowitz HILLSIDE DISTRICT -- Students at San Joaquin Miller Elementary school will take part in a special Flag Day celebration this year. Burbank Noon Lions Club members will visit the school at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, in the school's auditorium. About 200 fifth-graders who have been studying American history will watch a presentation about patriotism and flag history, presented by members of the club. Students will then join in saying the Pledge of Allegiance and will sing patriotic songs they have learned in class.
