BURBANK -- Last week, the Bellarmine-Jefferson High football team scored 65 points in a season-opening victory over Monroe. Turns out the Guards could have used some of that output in a rollover plan for this week. Bell-Jeff lost to Brentwood, 30-8, at Memorial Stadium on the campus of Burroughs High Saturday night. Before the game, Guards' coach David Machuca explained that he wanted his team to play bigger schools. After the game, he understood how much work needs to be done.

MEMORIAL FIELD - It will take at least another week for the Burroughs High football team to christen the newly renovated Memorial Field with a victory after it lost its season and home opener to visiting Paraclete Friday night, 35-10. The Indians had difficulty taking care of the ball and turning drives into touchdowns, as three turnovers led to Spirits scores in the loss with the most devastating coming 18 seconds before halftime when Paraclete's Christian Ruiz stripped a Burroughs wide receiver of the ball on a fourth-and-11 screen pass and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown, which gave the visitors a 17-3 lead at halftime.

MEMORIAL FIELD - Difficulty defending the pass and personal-foul penalties are two problems that have plagued the Burbank High football team in its first two games of the season. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, those problems didn't prove costly last week against an inferior Chatsworth team, as Burbank was able to come away with a win. However, against a talented West Ranch squad from the tough Foothill League on Thursday night, those same difficulties proved to be the Bulldogs' downfall.

NORTH HILLS - There is a lot that is different with the Bellarmine-Jefferson High football team this season. Along with a new coach, the Guards have plenty of new faces on their roster and the team has opened up its offense and is running a spread. However, with all that's new there is still something that hasn't changed with Bell-Jeff - the athletic ability of running back Josh Martinez. In a nonleague game with host Monroe Friday that featured 100 points, copious amounts of offense and a frenzied pace, the Guards received a stellar performance from Martinez and were able to come on in the second half to earn a 65-35 victory in the season opener for both teams.

MEMORIAL FIELD - Being the oldest high school in the city, it was perhaps fitting that Burbank High got the opportunity to compete in the first varsity football game at the newly renovated Memorial Field. The Bulldogs also got the chance to kick off the 2012 football season with a nonleague game Thursday night against visiting Chatsworth. Fortunately for Burbank, it will always have the distinction of being the first to notch a victory at the venerable stadium. The Bulldogs completely dominated the contest on both sides of the ball, hitting the Chancellors with a torrid running attack and stepping up on defense to limit Chatsworth to a lone field goal in the waning minutes.

There was not much depth to the Burroughs High football team during the 2011 season. With a workhorse of a running back in senior Zander Anding, the Indians were able to have a productive year despite possessing a one-dimensional offensive attack. "We couldn't pass to save our lives last season," said Burroughs Coach Keith Knoop, whose team opens the season Aug. 31 against Paraclete at Memorial Field. "We tried to throw and we failed miserably. We would get something like 30 yards a game.
