Who doesn't have a soft spot for Andy Griffith (who died last Tuesday)? You'd have to be pretty immune to benevolent paternalism to resist the down-home charm of Andy Taylor or most of the other roles he created. Griffith's career thrived primarily on TV. Yet some of his best work was in feature films, particularly when he was playing against type. Over the course of 53 years, he appeared in only about a dozen movies. Most of those roles were lovable types: in his last two movies he appeared as the voice of Santa Claus and a character referred to as “Grandpa Joe.” Sadly, the latter was in “Play the Game” (2009)

MEDIA DISTRICT — The national media is rife with hacks who endorse President Obama’s socialist agenda by committing sins of omission and co-mission, a large group of protesters said this weekend outside NBC Studios in Burbank. Each with their own issue, though most fell under the umbrella of massive government spending, “Can You Hear Us Now” demonstrators also stood their ground Saturday outside CNN in Atlanta and affiliate stations of NBC, ABC and CBS across the nation.

I 've been feeling like one of those oil-covered sea gulls on a beach in Louisiana. Every morning I get up and take a look at the newspaper. I glance at the headline, usually in dismay, then automatically flip to the bottom of the page to see who died. It's morbid, I know. But it's just habit. And you probably do it too. On Monday it was former Dodgers pitcher Jose Lima's picture at the bottom of the front page. He was only 37 years old, five years younger than me. That's hard to swallow.
