It’s becoming almost a cliche to say the new year will be a historic one — every year affects history in limitless ways. But with the worldwide economy on the brink of disaster and America’s first black president taking office, it seems reasonable to expect that this year will inspire a question or two on future SATs. As we look to the next 12 months, here is what we’d like to see in Burbank and beyond:  A savvy new superintendent. Burbank Unified School District Supt.

As I begin my term as mayor, I want to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues on the council for giving me the honor to serve our community in this role. While I feel a sense of both pride and humility, my strongest feeling is a sense of urgency. Twelve months is not a long time and there is much to be done as we tackle the important issues ahead. Burbank's reputation as "Media Capital of the World" was built by creativity, skill and innovation on a solid foundation of good management and sound fiscal policy.

Berit Kaesler might owe some of her athletic prowess to genetics. Being the daughter of a German gymnast probably aided in giving her the foundation she needed to become a success. “I used to be a swimmer and I used to play soccer,” said Kaesler, a standout aquatics athlete at La Cañada High. “But I was never that great at soccer, and swimming got really boring. “Water polo seemed to be the perfect fit for me. Can Burbank put a price on beauty? For the better part of 2008, the Burbank Boulevard beautification boondoggle was quoted at around $8 million (“Burbank Boulevard’s face-lift is a good move,” Editorial, April 26); then, astonishingly, in the final few weeks of the year, the Burbank Leader twice referred to the project in its pages as a $10-million project (“Mayor: State of city is relatively strong,” Nov. 8). Holy flipping cow! Somebody help me out here.

Laura Sturza BURBANK -- Trees give a lot more to the community than just an aesthetic boost, and Burbank residents can help increase the city's tree population during the Plant-a-Tree campaign. "They provide oxygen [and] the shade reduces heat around the city," Parks, Recreation and Community Services Director Mike Flad said. "[They also] absorb a lot of sound, which keeps the city quieter. And of course, it provides a great habitat for birds." Citizens, organizations and businesses are invited to contribute by planting trees in city parks for the 47th annual fund-raising drive.

Tubert and her coach are an inspiration As we come to the end of the year, we want to take a little time to reflect on the feel-good story of the year (?Meteoric rise,? Wednesday). A very deserved best wishes goes out from us to Emily Tubert, the young and outstanding golfer from John Burroughs High School. Only a junior, Tubert capped off the year by being named a Rolex Junior All-American by the American Junior Golf Assn. This coming on top of her winning the Pacific League individual championship by an amazing 12 strokes.

LA CRESCENTA ? From the start, there was little that the Burbank Bulldogs could do wrong. And, from the start, it was much the opposite for MJB Flooring. It equated to a six-run first inning for the Bulldogs en route to a 16-5 mercy-rule win in the Little League District 16 Junior Baseball Tri Cities championship at Dunsmore Field. "It was a great year," said Bulldogs Coach Alan Goldberg. "It all came together." The opening inning saw Burbank (20-3-1) take a 6-0 lead on five hits ?

BURBANK - It didn't matter to Derek Baer what lineup he faced. The senior goalkeeper for the Burbank High boys' water polo team knew it would be a challenge facing Flintridge Prep, ranked No. 4 in the latest CIF Southern Section Division V poll, on Tuesday in a nonleague home match. Baer stepped up and answered the call, as he made 12 saves to spark Burbank to a convincing 14-7 victory. “We knew coming in that it would be a tough matchup and we had to go out there and play our absolute best,” said Baer, who made seven second-half saves.
