GROSS PARK — Two comebacks in a span of five days proved to be too tall of a task for the Bellarmine-Jefferson High softball team. After falling behind early on Tuesday, the Guards were unable to mount a comeback, falling to Hillcrest Christian, 16-3, in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division VII playoffs at Gross Park. This coming on the heels of a dramatic, come-from-behind, 13-11, victory against North Country Christian in Friday's opening round. But the timely hits which propelled the Guards to victory just days earlier could not be found on Tuesday.

Jeff Tully Reserve players on the Providence High boys' volleyball team don't have time to rest on the bench. With an aggressive substitution game plan, Coach Andrew Bencze keeps the Pioneers moving in and out of a match with machine-like regularity. The Providence assembly line was working perfectly on Wednesday, as the Pioneers easily defeated Thousand Oaks Hillcrest Christian, 15-3, 15-7, 15-7, in a CIF Southern Section Division IV wild-card match at Providence.

BURBANK -- The Providence High boys' volleyball team wasn't too happy finishing the regular season third in the Liberty League. The Burbank boys' tennis team thought it should have won the Foothill League title outright, instead of sharing the crown with Valencia. Although the Pioneers and Bulldogs haven't had their seasons go the way they would have liked, the squads will get a chance for a little redemption in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

OLIVE PARK — Providence High softball Coach Joel Curtis almost didn’t recognize the Pioneers team he was watching play in the first two innings. In the opening frames of their nonleague game Monday against Granada Hills Hillcrest Christian, the Pioneers had their share of problems. The usually potent offense was stagnant, and the normally sure-handed Providence defense was plagued by errors. This was not the team that breezed to three straight wins to start the season.

PROVIDENCE HIGH -- Playing in his own 11th annual Providence Volleyball Tournament, the last thing Pioneer Coach Andrew Bencze wants is for his team to be embarrassed and lose in the early rounds of the event. Luckily the coach doesn't have to worry about that, as Providence has gotten off to a fine start in the boys' tourney at Providence High. The Pioneers advanced to the championship semifinals with a 25-14, 25-16, victory Friday against San Marino Southwestern Academy.
