“Eden” is a dreary contemporary Irish film, depicting a disintegrating marriage in a picturesque pub-filled Irish town, with alcohol the preferred tonic. At times, the dialect is difficult to understand, but the situation is all too familiar. Billy (Aiden Kelly) married Breda (Eileen Walsh), and they had two young children and a seemingly ideal marriage. But when the lights are out, and Billy finally comes home and into bed, Breda’s eyes remain open. Hoping for some sign of physical contact, she is invariably disappointed.

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" is right in step with the book of the same name. It was author J.K. Rowling's intention to make the themes in the books mature along with the characters. Therefore, this film is more cerebral and political, less escapist adventure. This is not your feel-good movie of the summer. It's a serious, intense film, appealing to a mature audience. That being said, my children and I loved it. Of course, we are Harry Potter fanatics. We didn't wear costumes or go to the midnight debut, but we probably would have liked this movie no matter how good or bad it was, simply because we can't get enough of Harry and Hogwarts and all the characters therein.

Alfred Hitchcock's reputation as a filmmaker was already on the rise when he died 32 years ago. Since then it has consistently (and rightly) grown ever greater. At the same time, his reputation as a person has taken a lot of blows ... whether rightly or not is a determination way above my pay grade. It's significant that Donald Spoto's biography - the first Hitchcock bio to be published after his death - was subtitled “The Dark Side of Genius.” Sacha Gervasi's new “Hitchcock” is technically based on Stephen Rebello's “Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho,” but it draws on decades of lore about the great director's obsessions - the most disturbing being his attempts to win the love of the young blond actresses he repeatedly cast.
