A five-week-old infant from Burbank is in critical but stable condition after suffering multiple broken bones, and her 19-year-old father is in police custody on suspicion of child abuse. The father, identified by police as Matthew Wojcik, was arrested Tuesday night after Children's Hospital Los Angeles staff alerted investigators of the infant's broken bones, and that the injuries may have been a result of child abuse. After interviewing the infant's parents at the hospital, Burbank police arrested Wojcik on suspicion of felony child abuse.

You'd expect Burbank to beat out Las Vegas in terms of having higher standards of living, lower crime rates or being more family friendly. But having a more robust nightlife? According to the event-listing website, Eventful, Burbank beat out the Sin City for the No. 1 spot in “The Scene” category, that is, the city with the most nightlife events. Of course, keep in mind that cities were ranked by listed events per capita. Also, making the “Most Eventful Cities Ranking” index was Pasadena, which came in at No. 4 in the categories for cities with populations under 150,000 people and for most “on campus” events.

Burbank police are warning motorists to expect delays in the area of Vanowen and Buena Vista streets on Wednesday and Thursday. Signals at the intersection will be completely down while crews relocate them, so traffic will be controlled by posted stop signs and flaggers. Burbank is joining the list of cities opening "cooling centers" for residents as a heat wave gripping the Southland pushes local temperatures into triple digits. Those seeking relief from the extreme heat -- with potential highs hitting 105 degrees Wednesday -- can visit the Buena Vista Library at 300 N. Buena Vista Street or the Central Library at 110 N. Glenoaks Boulevard through Thursday, the city announced today. The hours at Buena Vista are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., at the Central Library, 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Temperatures aren't expected to start subsiding until Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Thousands of Burbank residents on Tuesday turned out for National Night Out events across the city - part of a nationwide effort to encourage neighborhoods to band together in the fight against crime. At the main event on the Chandler Bikeway, police and parks officials brought everything from games to the mounted patrol to entertain residents as 18 other National Night Out parties took place throughout Burbank. Police use the citywide events to encourage residents to sign up for neighborhood watch programs and, as Sgt. Darin Ryburn said before the event, “for all of us, as officers, to reach out to the community.

Burbank police on Monday identified the man who was killed in a crash on Sunday as 33-year-old Roman Ramos Rubio, and said the 29-year-old driver who hit him could face a vehicular manslaughter charge in court on Tuesday. That man, identified by police as Ivan Valle, also of Burbank, remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail. Police allege Valle was intoxicated and driving without a valid driver's license when the crash occurred early Sunday morning. The fatal crash occurred when Valle's SUV collided head-on with a sedan driven by Rubio at the intersection of Buena Vista Street and Alameda Avenue at approximately 5:40 a.m. The impact of the collision caused the sedan to strike a light pole and a fence, while the SUV struck and sheared a fire hydrant.

The Olive Avenue off-ramp for the northbound 5 Freeway in Burbank will be closed for 55 hours starting Oct. 29 as part of a project to add carpool lanes in both directions. The $153-million project to add carpool lanes between the 134 Freeway and Magnolia Boulevard has been well under way now for months, and is expected to be completed by mid-2014, according to the California Department of Transportation. In addition to building a retaining wall on the northbound I-5 between Verdugo Avenue and Angelino Avenue, Caltrans is in the process of widening the northbound Olive Avenue off-ramp.

Burbank police have arrested the 14-year-old son of local day care operators for allegedly sexually molesting a 4-year-old client. The teenager, who was not identified because he is a minor, was arrested Sunday after the alleged victim's mother called police to lodge the complaint. An investigation determined that the male victim was at the day care center -- Mejia Family Day Care in the 2100 block of Pepper Street - when the alleged abuse occurred, police announced Tuesday. The teen is currently being detained at Sylmar Juvenile Hall on suspicion of sexually abusing a minor, police said.

The 10 electrical linemen from Burbank Water and Power who have been assisting with power restoration and relief efforts in New York City have returned “cold, tired and full of stories,” the city announced Tuesday. The men were part of a larger 27-member crew comprised of workers from Burbank, Anaheim, Pasadena and Riverside who took part in ongoing efforts to restore power in areas ravaged by Superstorm Sandy. The Burbank crew was able to return in time to spend Thanksgiving at home, according to the city.

The deadline for mail-in ballots for the Burbank primary is 7 p.m. today, so for all those procrastinators, that means in-person drop offs are you're only option. Residents can drop off their ballots at five locations - the Buena Vista Library, Joslyn Center, Tuttle Center, McCambridge Recreation Center and the city clerk's office - up until 7 p.m. today. Residents who lost or threw away their ballot can pick up a provisional ballot - also due by 7 p.m. -- from the city clerk's office.
