The 16-year-old boy who died Thursday night after sparring at Pullman's Gym in Burbank has been identified by authorities as Raul Alvarez Jr. Raul died Thursday after suddenly falling unconscious at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, where he was brought at about 6:45 p.m. when he complained of pain at Pullman's, police said. A handwritten sign on the door of Pullman's Gym Friday morning said the business would remain closed for a few days “in honor of Raul.” Burbank police Sgt. Darin Ryburn said it was an "unfortunate accident," adding that the North Hollywood teen was wearing protective gear around his head and lower body at the time he was sparring.

A Sigalert has been issued for what's being described as a small grass fire near the wetbound Ventura (134) Freeway and Victory Boulevard in Burbank. Firefighters from Burbank and Los Angeles were initially sent to the scene. The L.A. fire response has since been called off. There did not appear to be a major disruption to traffic. The Sigalert was issued at 1:32 p.m. [ Updated 1:55 p.m.: The Sigalert has has been canceled after Burbank firefighters handled the call.]

Woodbury University has announced its 13th president, Luis Ma. R. Calingo, who succeeds retiring Kenneth R. Nielsen. Calingo, who will be officially installed during an inauguration ceremony in October, hails from Dominican University of California in San Rafael -- a four-year, private Catholic college where he served as executive vice president and chief academic officer. He previously served as dean of the Boler School of Business at John Carroll University in Cleveland, and before that held various leadership posts in the Cal State system.

Burbank is joining the list of cities opening "cooling centers" for residents as a heat wave gripping the Southland pushes local temperatures into triple digits. Those seeking relief from the extreme heat -- with potential highs hitting 105 degrees Wednesday -- can visit the Buena Vista Library at 300 N. Buena Vista Street or the Central Library at 110 N. Glenoaks Boulevard through Thursday, the city announced today. The hours at Buena Vista are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., at the Central Library, 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Temperatures aren't expected to start subsiding until Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
