One reason John Paramo - the new principal at John Burroughs High School - feels he can understand teenagers is because he considers himself a child at heart. “Most parents say, 'How can you deal with teenagers?' For me, it's a piece of cake. I love the same music they like. I'm into the same things,” he said. It's the elementary school crowd, to which his 8-year-old son belongs, that puzzles him more, he added. Among high schoolers, when Paramo sees something that catches his attention, he'll stop a student and say something like: “Dude, I love those kicks you got on.” “It just takes that one time that you make that connection.

Soon, fans will be able to enjoy the game without the pain of splinters after the long-awaited revamp of Memorial Field is completed — the last stage in an $18.5-million, three-phase capital improvement project designed to modernize decrepit athletic facilities at Jordan Middle School, and Burbank and Burroughs high schools. John Burroughs High School has for too long labored under the dreary shadow of a field and stadium that hark back to the old days a little too much. But the community of the past has played a big part in ensuring the future of this asset.

What we don't know may have already hurt us, potentially in the pocketbook, but definitely in terms of trust. In 1997, 71% of voters supported a $112.5-million bond to repair decaying public school facilities across the Burbank Unified School District. This investment attracted some $140 million in additional state and federal matching funds to benefit thousands of kids at 17 schools, and the city's future is no doubt better for it. But when City Council members agreed earlier this summer to pitch in $14 million to help the district improve high school athletic fields, a fair question came up: If there isn't any bond money left, exactly how was it all spent?

It amazes me when I hear a few residents of Burbank whine about how they do not want to adopt change in their city ("Remove bike lanes from busy streets," June 12) because they don't want to be like other cities and like things the way they are. Things are not great the way they are, though, and other cities and towns have shown how adopting a few well-thought changes can increase quality of life, while keeping things as they are can hurt us — socially, financially and environmentally.

City Councilman David Gordon on Tuesday called on school district officials to provide a complete financial account of a voter-approved $112.5-million bond to modernize Burbank Unified facilities. The city has agreed to jointly fund at least $14 million for field-improvement projects that may have been eligible for the bond money. In a letter Tuesday to the Board of Education, Gordon requested records detailing how the bond, approved in 1997, was spent and on which projects between 1997 and 2005.
