Burbank police investigated a threat made by a John Burroughs High School student Wednesday afternoon after the student - who has not been identified - alluded to a teacher that the next day could hold potential danger. “The student said something inappropriate in class about it being a bad day - tomorrow being a bad day,” said Supt. Jan Britz, adding the student was taken into custody. School administrators reported the threat to police before the end of the school day, and officers found the student had neither the intention nor means to carry out the threat.

Bowen shared her life story of growing up as a shy girl in Rockford Ill., “frequently in trouble for doing things I should not have been doing.” All the while, however, she earned straight A's on her report cards without any ambitions of a political career. Perhaps it was the mix of cool jazz and hot salsa that pushed aside the recent heat spell and made for a perfect late-summer evening as John Burroughs High School's Instrumental Music Assn. presented its annual Salsa Under the Stars fundraiser last week. Staged in the school's quad, the event gave students, parents and supporters the opportunity to spread out their blankets and enjoy home-packed picnics or dinner provided by Tacos Maximo, brush up on their salsa skills by taking a dance lesson with Linda Shoemake, and then use those freshly enhanced skills to dance to the music of the John Burroughs High School Jazz Ensemble.

One reason John Paramo - the new principal at John Burroughs High School - feels he can understand teenagers is because he considers himself a child at heart. “Most parents say, 'How can you deal with teenagers?' For me, it's a piece of cake. I love the same music they like. I'm into the same things,” he said. It's the elementary school crowd, to which his 8-year-old son belongs, that puzzles him more, he added. Among high schoolers, when Paramo sees something that catches his attention, he'll stop a student and say something like: “Dude, I love those kicks you got on.” “It just takes that one time that you make that connection.
