Gary Moskowitz MEDIA DISTRICT NORTH -- Standing onstage in a cream-colored gown under bright spotlights in front of more than 500 people, Lindsay Muriedas dropped her jaw and gasped as she was crowned Miss Burbank 2002. "I feel so honored, and that feels great," said a flushed Muriedas, 17, a senior at Burbank High School. "This group was so supportive and not competitive. We all immediately clicked." Miss Teen Burbank, Mallory Sorkness, was equally humble after being crowned at Sunday's event, which took place in the Burbank Airport Hilton's Convention Center.

SENIOR ADULTS HONORED BY CITY OF BURBANK Seven Burbank residents whose ages range from 61 to 95 were honored May 19 by the Burbank City Council for their volunteer work. Grace Mylroie Patz was the recipient of the County of Los Angeles Outstanding Older American Award for her volunteer service at the Providence St. Joseph Medical Guild, Beta Sigma Phi, including various fundraising functions, and surpassing 15,000 service hours. Jesse Fox was recognized for his service to the Salvation Army, Optimist Club and John Burroughs High School sports programs.

MEYER -- BABINEAUX Melissa Ann Meyer and Paul Demaville Babineaux have announced their plans to marry in January. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Preston and Diane Meyer of Burbank. She graduated from John Burroughs High School and is attending Pasadena City College, where she will graduate in June with a associated science degree in paralegal. The bridegroom-to-be is the son of Ron and Brenda Mullins of Phoenix. He graduated from Burbank High School.

Gary Moskowitz MAGNOLIA PARK -- For now, the school district is not questioning whether John Burroughs High School should be using the Indian as its mascot. But the district is asking if the ways in which the school's students currently uses the Indian mascot are appropriate, and district officials will be asking the student body. "We are hoping to have a student study on the matter completed and reported to the school board in January," Burbank Unified School District Supt.

Spirit Squad offers car wash, breakfast John Burroughs High School Spirit Squad will have a dual fundraiser Saturday. Students will raise money for the squad with a pancake breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. and car washes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at John Burroughs High School, 1920 W. Clark Ave. Tickets for the breakfast are $4, $6 for the car wash. For more information, call (818) 558-4777. Board president to hold petition drive School Board President Paul Krekorian will have an informal coffee gathering from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday to discuss Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposals for education.

The two bodies will receive an update on the status of the joint-use facility improvement projects at Burbank High School, John Burroughs High School and Jordan Middle School. The projects include renovation of the infields at Burbank High and John Burroughs High School, installing eight-lane tracks at Burroughs and adding an additional 70 parking spaces at Jordan Middle School. Members of the council and the school board will also review several possible funding options for those projects.

Air Force Airman Joseph J. Gonzales, the son of Emilio R. Gonzales of Burbank, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Gonzales is a 2003 graduate of Burbank High School. Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Michael J. Aragones, the son of Irene and Jose Aragones of Burbank, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Aragones is a 2000 graduate of John Burroughs High School.
