Glendale’s Luna Playhouse is presenting an earnest but uneven production of “La Ronde,” the play that scandalized Europe in 1900 because it’s all about sex — dirty, casual, brutal, loveless, unhappy sex. The theme hasn’t improved with age. For today’s audience, sadly, the play has lost its shock value. Nevertheless, even for modern audiences, it’s 2 1/2 hours long. “La Ronde” is a metaphor for the transmission of venereal disease, beginning and ending with a prostitute who sleeps with a soldier, who sleeps with a parlor-maid, who sleeps with the young gentleman she’s working for, who sleeps with a married woman, whose husband sleeps with a sweet young girl, and so on. Each scene introduces a new lover until the end of 10 different scenes, when we’re back with the prostitute.
