GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Burroughs in Ayala Tournament : The Indians have experienced their share of ups and downs in the event. They began the event Saturday with a first-round win against Ganesha, 64-24. Ashley Alexander paced Burroughs with 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Teammate Lisha Elsenbach had seven points and 13 rebounds, Mallory Gutierrez had 11 points and four steals and Marilyn Flynn had five points and 10 rebounds. On Monday, the Indians lost to Junipero Serra, 59-49.

Bits and pieces from the local sports scene: Event won't be played for first time in 44 years: Officials and local boys' golf teams taking part in the 44th annual Burbank High Schools' Invitational today were hoping the recent rains that have soaked the area the past few days would not cancel the event. However, when a deluge hit the area Tuesday, it forced the cancellation of the event. The event ? sponsored by the Burbank Men's Golf Club ? was scheduled to kick off with shotgun start at 8 a.m. at De Bell Municipal Golf Course.

Air Force Airman Sasoon Haghverdi, son of Aram Haghverdi of Glendale, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is a 2001 graduate of Glendale High School. Army National Guard Pvt. Brian T. Sparks, son of Michelle Sparks of La Canada Flintridge and Terry Sparks of Ojai, has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. Air Force Airman Irene D. Peralta, daughter of Cynthia Peralta of Glendale, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Burbank program gets CIF recognition Until this week, no area team had been ranked among the top 10 in the CIF Southern Section. Among the four area schools -- Burbank, Burroughs, Bellarmine-Jefferson and Providence -- the Bulldog girls' basketball team almost made the Division IA elite last week when it was listed among "others." However, this week, the Burbank girls' water polo team has not only been recognized, but has made the top 10 among the toughest programs in Southern California.

Bits and pieces from the local sports scene: Dan Pouliot teams up to win golf championship : Dan Poulet and Jerry Price have decades of golf experience between them. However, despite years of play in Southern California Golf Association events, the two had never captured a championship. That changed Dec. 2, as Pouliot, a Burbank resident, and Jerry Price of Glendale won the fifth SCGA Senior Four-Ball Championship by two shots at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana.

If anybody knows the talent and ability of Anabell Gonzalez on the soccer field, it’s teammate Marlene Mejia. The star forwards on the Burbank High girls’ team have been playing together since they were fledging athletes on an under-10 squad, and they have provided the Bulldogs with an offensive punch this season. It has been Gonzalez, a junior, who has emerged as the team’s premier scorer this year. She has helped Burbank thrive in the Pacific League and advance to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs.

BURBANK — The Burroughs High boys’ soccer team had a tough going in last season’s CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs. After finishing tied for second in the Pacific League, the Indians defeated Lompoc, 3-2, in overtime and had to again go to overtime in their first-round match against No. 3-seeded Fullerton, losing, 3-1. Capturing its first league championship in 10 years this season, one might have expected Burroughs...
