The Burbank Magnolia Park Optimist Club had a very relaxed and fun first meeting for August. This warm weather made for lazy days so they decided to have fun and games instead of their usual exciting program. After a short business meeting, President Jesse Fox turned the meeting over to Terry Scott . There was a contest to see which person came to Burbank first, graduated from a Burbank school first, was married first and so on. The winners rotated from table to table.

Van Nuys getting on board with Burbank The Van Nuys Airport Citizens Advisory Council this week voted 11 to 4 on a resolution urging Burbank and Los Angeles to work together on noise issues at their airports. Bob Hope Airport has submitted an application to the Federal Aviation Administration for a curfew to curb all flights between 10 p.m. and 6:59 a.m. The FAA is expected to decide by November. The decision Tuesday appears to signal a thaw in the relationship between Burbank and Van Nuys officials.

Student wins drama award John Burroughs High School drama student Katie Dyler got her big break Sunday night when she won first prize at the English Speaking Union's Shakespeare Competition in Pasadena.

Roughly $12,000 was raised on Sunday to help support an annual relay and to possibly reignite the Burbank Police Citizens Academy Program. The Burbank Police Officers Assn. and the Burbank Police Department Baker to Vegas Committee raised the money during its first Cool Blue Bocce Ball Tournament on Sunday at Lakeside Country Club. Burbank Police run the annual Baker to Vegas relay race in April in memory of Burbank Police officers Matthew Pavelka, who was killed in the line of duty, and Danny Crawford.

Erin Park TOLUCA LAKE -- Golfers on the practice green set the backdrop as the star of the Chairman's Cup celebrity golf tournament sat in the shade of a tree and dangled her legs from her chair, her sneakers barely skimming the manicured grass. Nine-year-old Amy Drummond fielded questions from reporters and smiled shyly for the cameras at the daylong event held Monday at Lakeside Country Club. Organized by Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles, the second annual event raised more than $100,000 for pediatric eye cancer research, hospital officials said.

SUNLAND -- For local enthusiasts, De Bell Municipal Golf Course is the only public facility in the city. However, when golfers want to venture outside the city to play a round or two, they now have another option along with Lakeside Country Club in Toluca Lake, Oakmont Country Club and Scholl Canyon Golf Course in Glendale and Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena. The Angeles National Golf Club, the first Nicklaus Design Co.'s course in Los Angeles County, held its grand opening May 27. The facility gives local golfers the opportunity to play on a course that is not only challenging, but features scenic views and beautiful landscaping.
