An Assembly committee suspended its decision on a bill that would improve outreach efforts for insured cancer screening services for women until the end of the month. Assembly Bill 56, sponsored by Democratic Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, aims to promote awareness for mammography services that are covered under health insurance policies, but that only half of eligible women take advantage of. California law requires mammography services as a benefit in health-care plans.

Jackson Bell Philip Biderman believes the new Providence Breast Health Center not only makes his job easier, it also offers better service. But equally important, the center's three state-of-the-art digital mammography machines -- the only in the San Fernando Valley -- will save patients trips to their doctors, said Biderman, a general surgeon at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center. Previously, the patients' primary physicians would first have to recommend an analog mammography, then after the procedure at the center, they would be referred back to their physicians before seeing a surgeon, who would take another screening.

A free seminar on cancer awareness for women will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center. The center's team of medical experts will present an overview of what women should be aware of when it comes to cancer. The panel -- Raul Mena, medical director of the center; Richard Friedman, a gyne- cologist/oncologist on the medical staff at the center and Kim Reyes, an obstetrician/ gynecologist on the medical staff at the center -- will discuss breast cancer, gynecological tumors, skin cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, nutrition and the latest information on hormone replacement therapy.
