Jeff Tully BELLARMINE-JEFFERSON HIGH -- The Bellarmine-Jefferson High girls' basketball team and Coach Bryan Camacho have had video tapes of Van Nuys Montclair Prep since December, just in case the Guards would face the Mounties in the playoffs. Those tapes may just come in handy, as Bell-Jeff will take on host Montclair Prep today at 7:30 p.m. in a first-round CIF Southern Section Division VAA game. The Guards earned the right to take on the Mounties Thursday by winning their wild-card game, 54-34, on the road at Riverside Woodcrest Christian High.

BELLARMINE-JEFFERSON HIGH — There was a friendly exchange taking place throughout the CIF Southern Section Division VA girls’ basketball playoffs between Bellarmine-Jefferson High Coach Bryan Camacho and Montclair Prep Coach Bob Webb. “He would text me the results after his games and I would text him our score, or we would just call one another to wish each other good luck,” Camacho said. Although the coaches would probably not admit it, with Bell-Jeff the No. 1 seed in the division and the Mounties at No. 2, the men figured there was a good chance they would meet in the championship game.

BURBANK HIGH — A fourth-quarter meltdown will give any coach fits, but it's a little easier to stomach when you've got a 17-point lead to work with. In Wednesday's CIF Southern Section Division IIAA wild card home game, the Burbank High boys' basketball team followed a first half which Coach Jose Hernandez deemed its "best of the season" with a somewhat less effective performance in the second. Nevertheless, despite converting just one field goal and scoring only six points over the final 10:30, the Bulldogs hung on for a 52-47 victory against Montclair.

BURBANK HIGH -- Playing in the tough Foothill League, the Burbank High girls' basketball team hasn't exactly been able to strike fear in its opponents the past few years. However, when it comes to the Bulldogs' top player -- Christine Kepenekian -- she has been able to rattle her share of teams, as well as cause headaches for more than a few coaches. Ask Valencia Coach Jerry Mike about the 5-foot-7 senior and his mind races back to the night of Jan. 17, when Kepenekian's long three-pointer at the buzzer was the difference in a 52-49 Viking home loss to the Bulldogs.

BELLARMINE-JEFFERSON HIGH — The buzz around Tuesday’s girls’ basketball game between Bellarmine-Jefferson High and Montclair Prep was it could possibly be a prelude to the CIF Southern Section Division VA championship contest in March. With fine ballhandlers, accomplished shooters and solid defensive play from both squads, the championship game of the Bell-Jeff Holiday Classic looked to be a premier matchup. However, all the hype didn’t do this game justice.
