The California Supreme Court ruled last week that churches that part with their denominations may lose their church buildings and property. The ruling came in a case involving several congregations that split with the Episcopal Church after the national church consecrated a gay man as a bishop in 2003, but lawyers said the decision would apply to other denominations as well. Should congregations be allowed to take their property with them if they break off from their mother churches?
