?The Spirit? is a colossal embarrassment for all involved, including the audience, who will feel like complete fools once they realize what they?ve actually paid money to see. Created in the 1940s by visionary writer/artist Will Eisner, ?The Spirit? has been adapted for the screen by another comics legend, Frank Miller. Too bad the movie is more about Miller and his retrograde obsessions and considerably less, if at all, about Eisner?s ?The Spirit.? Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht)

Some kids have mentors that take them to ballgames, help with their homework, or simply guide them through the obstacles of life. I have a food mentor. As soon as I got teeth, I was chewing on a gyro and learning that raw fish comes on a roll of rice. My mentor is my cousin Anita, who lives in Oregon now and works for Harry and David. So when she's not sending me Moose Munch, she is here visiting her old hometown and teaching me a thing or two about food. Last week, I knew the perfect place to take my mentor for lunch was Octopus Japanese Restaurant.

Molly Shore There were no summer breaks for members of the Burbank Tournament of Roses Assn. Instead, the well-organized crew began its months-long construction of the city's 2003 float, which travels down Colorado Boulevard in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day. The whimsical entry, "Bathtime Friends," is 42 feet long, 20 feet high and 20 feet wide. It was designed by Toluca Lake resident Julianne Buescher, and depicts a small boy playing in a bathtub in the middle of the ocean.

More than 200 volunteers are expected to flock to the Burbank Water and Power campus in the coming days to lay 12,000 roses on the city's 45-foot-long, volunteer-built float for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. Keeping in line with this year's theme - “Oh, the Places You'll Go!” - Burbank will take parade-goers on a “deep-sea adventure.” Steven Edward - the vice president of the Burbank Rose Float Assn. who's been involved in creating the city's float since 1990 - said he loves the annual challenge and the lifelong friends he makes along the way. “Every year is fresh,” Edward said.

Looking somewhat like an oversized mid-Atlantic-style home with a huge brick chimney, QQ Buffet & Grill has stood at the corner of Central and Arden in Glendale for about four years The long sign out front claims ?Authentic Asian? cuisine, as well as Italian, Thai, American, barbecue, Chinese, Japanese and sushi. Amazingly QQ manages to fit these all in at the many buffet stations. The entryway is floor-to-ceiling brick, from the outside porch on in to the welcoming fireplace. Our hostess sat us immediately, took our drink order, then turned us loose on all the continents represented at the buffet.
