BELLARMINE-JEFFERSON HIGH — Not many teams have the chance to make history. Not many teams have the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy. Not many teams get to be the first. The Bellarmine-Jefferson High girls’ basketball squad has the opportunity to do something no other program in the history of Burbank high school sports has been able to accomplish — win a team state championship. The Guards will get the opportunity to do just that in the CIF State Basketball Division V Championship game at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

BURBANK — Shelley Gupilan has been the leader of the Bellarmine-Jefferson High girls’ basketball team all season. In the biggest game of the year — and biggest in school and city history — the Guards were looking for the senior to step up one more time. And that’s exactly what she did — big time. Gupilan scored a game-high 22 points Friday to lead Bell-Jeff to a 55-47 win against Pinewood in the CIF State Basketball Division V Championships at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

Darleene Barrientos They can each fit in the palm of your hand, but to Cub Scout Pack 219, they were the whole world for a day. About 50 parents, grandparents and siblings gathered at St. Finbar Parish School to watch the pack's annual Pinewood Derby, with the children and parents racing their 7-inch pinewood derby cars. A hush fell over the room Sunday as the final four cars sat positioned to race down the 32-foot blue and yellow track. The audience held its breath as the cars flew toward the finish line, where an infrared beam shone up from a tiny hole inside each track to take the car's time.

Cody, 9, finished first out of the 35 Cub Scouts who entered in Sunday's Pinewood Derby Race at St. Finbar's Catholic Church, which sponsors Pack No. 219. Whether it's NASCAR or Pinewood Derby, the will to win is there for several of the participants, including Cody. "I feel good ... because I had revenge on my friend," he said, beaming.

Maya Kukes MAGNOLIA PARK -- They weigh less than 5 ounces and measure just 6 inches long, but to the boys in Cub Scout Pack 219, these cars could be from the Indy 500. The tiny, handmade cars raced from a 25-foot gradual incline, traveling at about 9 mph, as part of the fourth annual Pinewood Derby. About 150 spectators gathered at St. Finbar School to watch the races on Sunday. The first category was "open racing," for boys and girls as well as adults.

Darleene Barrientos Among all the excitement, anticipation, food, friends and fun, the centers of attention -- 7-inch, colorful Pinewood Derby cars -- sat neatly on a table, waiting for their moments in the spotlight. Dozens of parents, grandparents and siblings of Cub Scouts Pack 219 gathered at St. Finbar Parish School's hall Sunday morning to watch the handmade cars race down a 32-foot blue and yellow track in the middle of the hall. The atmosphere was much like any other racetrack scene, with sponsor cars being prepped in one corner, drivers waiting in line to register and spectators waiting impatiently for the races to begin.

FULLERTON — The Bellarmine-Jefferson High girls’ basketball team hadn’t been pushed to the brink by any team late in a game throughout the postseason. That was, however, until the Guards faced View Park Prep Saturday in the Southern California Regional of the CIF State Basketball Division V Championships. Bell-Jeff saw its lead dwindle down to two points with just over five minutes remaining, as its hopes of making it to the state final looked to be in jeopardy.

The question for fans of the Bellarmine-Jefferson High girls’ basketball team is: Can the Guards repeat their record-breaking postseason performance from a year ago? Last season, Bell-Jeff defeated Pinewood, 55-47, in the CIF State Basketball Division V Championships at Arco Arena in Sacramento. It was the first state title by any team — in any sport — in city history. The victory gave Bell-Jeff 34 wins, which set a new school record. In addition, the team ended the season on a 20-game winning streak.
