BURBANK — The media capital of the world will become a regional art center buzzing with creative energy and have the ability to coordinate rehearsals, gallery shows and performances on a Wikipedia- inspired website under a Cultural Arts Plan unanimously approved by the City Council this week. Crafted by studio executives, filmmakers, playwrights, photographers, college professors and city executives, the plan serves as a master document for formalizing cultural arts leadership, rekindling public support and participation and improving usage of existing facilities.

Molly Shore At last year's Youth Leadership Conference, Glendale High School sophomore Audrey Andrade learned a lot about the qualities of a leader. To her surprise, Audrey said she discovered that choices leaders make are similar to the ones she and her peers face in their daily lives. Because Audrey enjoyed the experience last year, she returned this year as a member of the student- advisory planning committee. Audrey joined dozens of other Glendale and Burbank students who teamed up with community members in education, government and business at the 18th annual conference Monday at the Hilton Burbank Airport and Convention Center.

WOMEN RECOGNIZED BY LEGISLATIVE OFFICIALS Several area women were among the 25 recognized during the 10th annual Women in Business Legislative Update and Awards Luncheon on Friday at the Pasadena Hilton Hotel. The event was presented by Sen. Carol Liu (D-21st District); Assemblyman Paul Krekorian (D-43rd District); and Assemblyman Anthony J. Portantino (D-44th District). Those honored were Barbara Dunn , partner with Lacey, Dunn & Do in Glendale; Pamela Elyea , co-owner with her husband Jim of History For Hire, and Glendale Arts board member; medical doctor Narine Arutyounian , medical director of West Coast Doctors in Glendale; Mona Marcos , regional manager of Aflac and board member with Glendale YWCA and Glendale Sunrise Rotary; Sandy Doughty , executive director of GAR Services and president of Soroptimist International of Glendale.

About 450 of Glendale Community College President and Supt. John Davitt's closest friends honored him Saturday night at the Universal Sheraton Hotel in University City. When he retires on May 30, what will be missed most is the way he makes people feel like family, well-wishers said repeatedly during the gala retirement party. By fostering a family atmosphere, Davitt inspired the staff, said Steve White, vice president of instruction. "He's put a real human touch into management," White said.

This past weekend was a showcase of the strength, community service and leadership of Burbank women as the Zonta Club of Burbank and the La Providencia Guild of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles respectively gathered for two of their most prestigious annual events. On Saturday, the Burbank Zontians convened at The Castaway to honor their 2008 Woman of the Year, Lucy Burghdorf who serves as the manager of community relations at the Bob Hope Airport. Among those in attendance to honor Burghdorf were her daughter and son-in-law, Trisha and Brad van Dillen and close family friend, Giovanna Delisio ; Mayor Dave Golonski ; Vice Mayor Gary Bric ; Councilwoman Anja Reinke ; incoming City Manager Mike Flad ; Dan Feger , who serves as the executive director of the Bob Hope Airport, and Victor Gill, who handles the airport’s public affairs and communications.

Las Floristas launches plans for floral headdress ball Las Floristas members and guests celebrated the preview party at the R.M.S. Queen Mary in Long Beach harbor Feb. 3 in anticipation of the 63rd annual Floral Headdress Ball, "Passport Around the World," planned for April 20. Proceeds benefit the Las Floristas Children's Charities at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, for which Las Floristas has already raised more than $5.5 million.

Standout students from high schools in Burbank, Glendale and La CaƱada Flintridge connected with area leaders Monday at the annual Youth Leadership Conference in Burbank to discuss leadership and ethics inside and outside the classroom. The event, organized by the Character and Ethics Project, was at the Burbank Airport Marriott Hotel & Convention Center and brought together a group of 100 athletes, club leaders and student government members to meet and learn from businesspeople, law enforcement and city officials.
