Jeff Tully Having two of their best players missing for a tough tournament last weekend didn't faze the Burroughs girls' basketball team and Coach Doug Nicol. "I tell my team we have to concentrate on who we do have, not who we don't have," Nicol said. And that's exactly what the Indians did in the 11th annual Lady Knights Summer Classic at El Monte High. Burroughs completed the tournament Sunday, finishing 13th out of 32 squads. Not bad considering the Indians were missing two of its starters -- Tulyah Gaines and Shannon Davies.

Jeff Tully Summer is a time for learning. And if the Burroughs High baseball team has learned one thing the last two months, that it can win -- and play well doing it. That has been evident in the Valley Invitational Baseball League Championships, where the Indians have shown that they may be a force for next year's high school campaign. However, the summer came to an end for the Indians Thursday, as they fell to Westlake, 13-3, in a fourth-round playoff game at Canyon High.

LA CRESCENTA — The cross-country teams from Burroughs and Burbank highs both participated in the 40th Annual Staub/Barnes Invitational at Crescenta Valley Park on Saturday, but did so with considerations of future competitions in mind. Burroughs Coach John Peebles took no chances with his top girls’ runner, Sadie Martinez, and held the senior out of the Division 1 girls’ race because of a sore back. Needing fresh legs for next week’s Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno, Burbank Coach Trevor Marca held his girls’ team out of the Division 1 race altogether.

BURBANK HIGH — So much for the Glendale High girls' water polo team not being able to knock off a powerhouse like Burbank. Glendale showed its worth and pulled off its biggest win of the season Tuesday night with a stunning 9-7 victory against host Burbank in a semifinal match of the Pacific League Tournament. The fourth-seeded Nitros (13-12, 4-3 in league) will face second-seeded Crescenta Valley (15-8, 6-1) in the league's championship match at 6 p.m. Thursday at Burbank.

Jeff Tully BURROUGHS VS. VALENCIA WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday. WHERE: Valencia High. RECORDS: The Indians and Vikings are both 4-1. LAST WEEK: Burroughs defeated Crescenta Valley, 35-21; Valencia lost to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 33-3. OUTLOOK: The Indians could look at their opening Foothill League game two ways. One would be they are opening league after a 4-1 start -- their best in years -- and Burroughs wants to play tough competition when it still has momentum.

tullyAlthough they don't have to face Foothill again, Bulldogs will travel to Capistrano Valley for opener.BURBANK HIGH -- Burbank High and Coach Ashley Ryan were hoping they didn't have to face powerhouse Anaheim Foothill again in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division I girls' water playoffs. The previous two seasons, the Bulldogs had to travel to Orange County, only to lose to the talented Knights. Although Burbank will not face Foothill -- the No. 2 seed -- for a third time, it will again have to venture behind the "Orange Curtin" for this year's postseason.

From the street, it looks like any other building: a shingled tile roof atop a red brick façade. But once inside Be Jane Inc. headquarters, a bright interior accented with sky blue, orange and yellow walls inspires just the sort of fresh and creative flair that the company is all about. "When we came here this whole office space was a little bit tired-looking," said Eden Jarrin, who founded Be Jane in 2003 with Heidi Baker. "So given that we're 'Janes' at heart, we definitely wanted to fix up the place."
