GIRLS' SOCCER Walnut 3, Burbank 1 : The Bulldogs gave up three goals in the first 20 minutes of the match Friday and lost the CIF Southern Section Division II first-round contest on the road. "[Walnut] was just too fast for us," said Burbank assistant coach Edgar Manvelyan, whose team ends the season 13-2-5. "This is the best team that we've played all season." Walnut (19-5-1) — the San Antonio League champion — scored a goal 15 seconds into the match and added another in the third minute and a third before the mid-way point of the first half.

PROVIDENCE HIGH — There was a point in Tuesday’s CIF Southern Section Division IVAA match that Providence High girls’ volleyball Coach James Jimenez thought his team could defeat Rio Hondo Prep in three games — and maybe four if it was pushed. After all, Providence entered the match as the co-Liberty League champion and Rio Hondo Prep was the fourth-seeded team from the Prep League. But in a short span, Jimenez saw his team fighting just to keep its season alive, as a determined Kares team took two of the first three games.

BURBANK HIGH — The Burbank High girls' water polo team took pride in hosting its CIF Southern Section Division IV first-round playoff match Tuesday against Westridge. It was the first time in program history the Bulldogs hosted a postseason contest. That pride was amplified significantly when Burbank won its first-ever playoff match, downing Westridge, 13-3. "I'm really happy for the girls, especially for the seniors who have been in the program for four years," said Burbank Coach Carlos Pelayo, whose team finished second in the Pacific League.

UPLAND ? The teams traded errors, unearned runs and leads. In the end, the Flintridge Prep baseball squad saw its season end on a disappointing note. Flintridge Prep squandered three leads en route to an 11-10 loss to Upland Christian on Friday in a CIF Southern Section Division VI first-round loss at Upland Memorial Park. The Rebels (14-7) picked up their equipment prior to meeting with friends and family members before boarding the team bus back to La Ca"ada Flintridge wondering what might have been.

BURBANK — If an opponent can’t stop the Bellarmine-Jefferson High girls’ basketball team early in a game, it’s likely they will get steam rolled. The Guards have enjoyed their share of quick starts this season, which have left more than a few opposing teams writhing in their wake. St. Margaret’s is the latest victim to feel the wrath of the Bell-Jeff offensive juggernaut. The Guards jumped out to a big first-quarter lead Wednesday and increased that to a substantial advantage at halftime to defeat the host Tartans, 74-26, in a CIF Southern Section Division VA quarterfinal game.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — It didn’t take long to figure out who would be victorious when Flintridge Prep hosted Providence on Wednesday night in a first-round playoff game. Flintridge Prep built a 13-point lead at the end of the first quarter that swelled to a 24-point advantage by first half’s end, leading to a lopsided Rebels triumph against the underdog Pioneers. Junior guard Jonathan Woo collected 18 points, four assists and three steals to help Flintridge Prep record an impressive 71-41 victory in a CIF Southern Section Division V-AA contest.

CLAIREMONT — The Burbank High boys' tennis team had to face some extremely successful teams in the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs. For the second straight postseason match Tuesday, the Bulldogs took on an opponent that was not only a league champion, but undefeated as well. Unfortunately for No. 4-seeded Burbank, its first setback of the season came in a 10-8 quarterfinal loss to fifth-seeded Webb on the road. The loss also marked the final match for Burbank Coach Paul McNiff, who is stepping down after four years because of an increase in his academic responsibilities at the school.

BURBANK — BellarmineJefferson High boys' volleyball Coach Miguel Segura has no idea when the last time the Guards hosted a CIF Southern Section playoff match. "I don't think we even did that when I played," said Segura, an all-league player for the Guards who graduated in 1996. "All I can tell you is that it's been a very long time." The Guards will finally get their chance to play a postseason match at home when they host Pasadena Poly at 4 p.m. Friday in a Division V first-round contest.
