BURBANK - It was a forgettable second half for the Providence High boys' basketball team in its championship game with Chatsworth in the 25 th annual Providence Paul Sutton Tip-Off Classic. The Pioneers weren't able to find answers for Chatsworth's tenacious defense, particularly in the second half where Providence attempted only 22 field goals and watched as Chatsworth built a double-digit lead in the third quarter and sustained it in the fourth en route to a 73-59 victory at Providence High School.

PROVIDENCE - Just to get to the championship game of the inaugural Liberty League tournament, the Providence High girls' volleyball team had to rewrite history, sweeping a Holy Martyrs team in Monday's semifinal which had previously swept it during the regular season. Repeating that feat in the championship match against Pacifica Christian, though, proved too much to ask on Tuesday night at Providence High School, as the Seawolves came away with a 25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 25-17 victory to secure the Liberty League crown.

Amid the hectic preparations of a dress rehearsal for the Providence High School musical “Godspell” on Thursday, a phantom voice suddenly resounded in the auditorium. “I need to get a test on Jesus here,” said the soundman, Dayne Adams. “Godspell” seemed an apt choice for the school’s annual musical this year, said Debbie Learned, musical director of the production. “Our Easter season comes early this year, and we thought it was good to do ‘Godspell’ and then go right into it,” she said.

Providence High School senior speaker Alexia Townsend and her 151 classmates got their diplomas Saturday at a peculiar place that had spooked her parents, she said. “They would have slept here to get good seats, but they didn’t because it’s a graveyard,” she said. But the solemn surroundings outside the Hall of Liberty at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills weren’t without meaning, she said. “Graves quite literally leave their mark on the world,” she said, explaining that her experience at Providence had left its mark on her and her peers.

The success of 110 seniors who graduated from Providence High School on Saturday will not be judged today or tomorrow, but in a few decades, said commencement speaker Michael Madden, vice president for advocacy and development at Providence Health and Services. The list of renowned universities and colleges that graduates will attend next year is only an interim measure of the class' success, he said. "The long-term measure is how you become leaders in your community," Madden told graduates.

When then-Burbank High School student Yvonne Soto started work with Burbank Unified School District's Regional Occupation Program in Animal Care, she was by no means a cat lover. But fast-forward three years, and Soto is now not only very fond of felines but is enthusiastically pursuing a veterinary career while working as a vet tech at Media City Animal Hospital in Burbank. In fact, she's not the only one. Katie Hayes and Carlos Rivas, both part of the first ROP in Animal Care program, also turned a semester of volunteering with animals into more than just school credit.
