GLENDALE — Local water agencies are taking a wait- and-see approach to an announcement Thursday that state water deliveries could be slashed 85% next year if dry conditions persist. The announcement from the California Department of Water Resources, while not unexpected, underscored the need for a wet winter and a solution to environmental issues that have tied up water deliveries from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, officials said. Local water agencies also seized on the announcement to renew calls for Southland residents to conserve water, even through the winter months.

“The Rainmaker” was a delightfully romantic tale when it became a smash hit on Broadway in 1954. It’s the story of a plain young woman named Lizzie, whose life is as parched and dry as the drought-stricken ranch where she lives, and how a spell-binding con man with a heart of gold can bring both Lizzie and the ranch back to life. If the current production of “The Rainmaker,” now at A Noise Within, is flawed, the fault primarily lies with an interpretation that’s simply too reality-based, in a time where audiences arguably should never have grown used to reality TV. The romance and comedy are still there 54 years later.

BURBANK — Rain in February and the discovery of solid rock beneath a construction site has officials pushing back the planned completion date of the clubhouse to December at De Bell Municipal Golf Course. Originally slated to be finished Sept. 26, construction hit a snag when crews found up to eight feet of bedrock they were forced to grate to set a solid foundation for the $6.77-million endeavor to replace the dilapidated clubhouse, Project Manager Phillip Clifford said.

BURBANK — Three waves of rainfall are bearing down on Burbank, with heavy showers forecast for the weekend, weather officials said. A light mist hung in the sky Tuesday, which was likely the most mild of the precipitation expected in the coming days, said Stuart Seto, a weather specialist for the National Weather Service Forecast Office. “Burbank and other places had some drizzle, but it was not very measurable,” he said. Officials expect a weather system to hit on Thursday and Friday, bringing between .10 and .25 inches of rain.

Two women were injured Friday morning when their car flipped into the Los Angeles River off the Golden State (5) Freeway, officials said. The 43-year-old driver of the Toyota Matrix was traveling north on the freeway in the fast lane when she lost control at an unknown, but high, speed, California Highway Patrol Officer Todd Workman said. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred at 4:50 a.m., he said. The car veered toward the side, swerving down an embankment, running through a grove of trees, finally flipping over into the western channel of the wash, Burbank Fire Department Capt.

CITY HALL — A statewide water supply crisis has prompted the need for a citywide conservation strategy, Burbank Water and Power officials said. Average annual rainfall in Burbank is 15 inches. Last year, the city recorded 3 inches, the lowest total in the 129 years of monitoring rainfall, according to Water and Power. But the dry weather is only part of the story, said Bill Mace, Burbank Water and Power’s assistant general manager. “The problem we are facing is not entirely related to the drought,” he said.

First-time pet owners are sometimes surprised by pet odors and how stinky pets can be. This is a major cause of pet abandonment. Puppies and kittens are little and cute at first, but as they grow and the realization sets in that you have a large (or small) critter who occupies your house, depositing hair, dragging in dirt, debris and sometimes dead birds or rodents from outside, and sometimes other unwanted problems, like a pup not being fully potty trained, or the necessity of cleaning the litter box frequently, pets are abandoned.
