Update on local athletes competing in college. Emily Tubert (Burroughs High, 2010) junior, University of Arkansas women's golf : The former All-Area standout for the Indians and her Razorback teammates are preparing for the 2013 NCAA Championships, which begin Tuesday and conclude on Friday. The fifth-ranked Razorbacks punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships by way of a program-best tie for third place at the 2013 NCAA East Regional in Auburn, Ala., May 9-11. The Razorbacks posted an 864 en route to advancing.

Windy and challenging conditions greeted the women golfers Sunday in the final round of the 2012 Southeastern Conference Championship at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. Despite the circumstances, Burroughs High graduate and University of Arkansas sophomore Emily Tubert was able to battle through the conditions and help the Razorbacks to a second-place finish. Tubert fired a final-round 73 to finish third overall, leading No. 36 Arkansas to a runner-up finish in the event.

Tubert wins first college tourney It didn't take long for Emily Tubert to make an impact in college. Playing for the University of Arkansas women's golf team, the 2010 Burroughs High graduate stormed to a victory in her first tournament as a freshman for the Razorbacks. Tubert — the 2009-10 Leader Female Athlete of the Year — paced Arkansas to a final round surge and the title at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic Sunday at the Jimmie Austin Oklahoma University Golf Course in Norman, Okla.

Bits and pieces from the local sports scene : Finding out who is the city's best : There will be a large group of youngsters running and jumping around at Burbank High today, that is, if the weather cooperates. But the boys and girls will be scampering about for a purpose — to find out who are the best middle school track and field athletes in the city. Athletes will be taking in the annual Burbank All-City Track Meet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. between the three local schools, John Muir, Jordan and Luther Burbank.

Last week was a good week for golfer Emily Tubert. Not only did the Burroughs High graduate make the cut in her first LPGA event, but she was also selected to the 2011-12 Golf World's list of players to watch. Tubert received a sponsor's exemption for the Walmart NW Arkansas LPGA Championship, which began Friday, and tested her skills against the world's best players at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers, Ark. Tubert make the cut, and competed in the final round Sunday. Tubert finished even over the three days, carded a three-round 213 with rounds of 74-68-71 on the par-71 course in her first professional tournament.

BURBANK — Emily Tubert is surely getting the most out of her freshman college season. Tubert, a Burroughs High graduate and true freshman at the University of Arkansas, has had a first season with the Razorbacks' women's golf team filled with success. And in turn, Arkansas has benefitted from the play of the former All-Area player of the year. "I've loved every minute of this season," Tubert said. "It has just been amazing and a truly great experience. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but at this school, with this team.

Emily Tubert (Burroughs High, 2010), Arkansas women's golf, senior : The former Leader Female Athlete of the Year received an impressive conference honor last week when Tubert was selected as the Southeastern Conference Women's Golfer of the Week. Tubert had a solid performance April 5 at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, helping the No. 4 Razorbacks to a runner-up finish. She opened with a 76 in stroke play, and then won three matches in the match- play portion of the tournament.

Burroughs graduate wins second-straight honor at Arkansas : Former Burroughs High standout Emily Tubert surely didn't endure a sophomore slump this season playing for the University of Arkansas women's golf team. For the second straight year, Tubert has been named a first-team All-American. In addition, she was also selected to the National Golf Coaches Assn. All-Central Region Team for the second consecutive year.

BURROUGHS ? Emily Tubert knew she was faced with a decision that couldn?t be taken lightly. After three successful seasons with the Burroughs High girls? golf team ? and success as a junior player ? the junior was flooded with college scholarship offers, as she received interest from nearly 50 schools. Like a picky diner navigating her way through a sumptuous buffet, Tubert sampled what the colleges had to offer, making sure not to overindulge herself. She embarked on a 10-college tour, visiting institutions like Duke University, the University of California and Arizona State University.

Keeping up with area athletes competing in college : Western Nelson (Burroughs High) freshman, Cal State San Marcos men's cross-country : The former Leader Male Athlete of the Year had a fine performance last weekend in the San Diego Collegiate Challenge, hosted by University of California San Diego. Nelson won the men's 3,000-meter race by 10 seconds, posting a time of 8 minutes 37.72 seconds. In the same race, Jonathan Alpizar — another Burroughs graduate — placed fifth in 8:52.

The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level. Emily Tubert (Burroughs High, 2010) freshman, Arkansas University golf: Most athletes need time to get acclimated after jumping to the next level of competition. Tubert, on the other hand, hasn't needed a grace period to adjust to college golf. Tubert has won three of her eight tournaments and earned two Southeastern Conference Women's Golfer of the Week honors already this year, most recently on March 29. The distinction came after her performance at the MountainView Collegiate tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
