Students danced, posed and strutted their way down a red carpet in front of Luther Burbank Middle School on Friday to celebrate their recent progress on pivotal statewide tests. A few students made several trips down the red carpet, and two students intentionally tripped on the celebrity matting as students, faculty, parents and administrators praised their achievements. The school’s results have increased by about 100 points the last five years, pushing Luther Burbank past an important threshold in the Academic Performance Index.

Church has its own Oscar awards show The drama ministry at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Burbank will roll out the red carpet at the sanctuary for the ?Seventh Annual Greg Baldwin Oscar Sunday Extravaganza? at 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday at the church, 542 N. Buena Vista St., Burbank. Drawing inspiration from the five films nominated for ?Best Picture,? the writer/director team of Greg and Melissa Baldwin have concocted a faux awards show that brings home a message about God. The public is invited to wear tuxes or gowns.

On Hollywood's most glamorous night of the year there will be two local high school graduates not far from the red carpet. Hassan Elzein, 25, a Burbank High School graduate, is the website assistant for the Communications department of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and Christine Farris, 37, a graduate of Bellarmine-Jefferson High School, is the exhibition design coordinator for the academy's museum, which is now in the planning...

First Lutheran School of Burbank will offer "Time in the Son" summer camp program for children ages 5 to 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 7 through Aug. 13. An extended day-care program will also be offered to the children attending summer camp from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. at no additional charge. Registration is $130, and weekly rates are $90 for three days a week and $130 for five days a week. For more information, call (818) 848-3076 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Activities include daily chapel time, weekly field trips, computers and a talent show.

The Desi Geestman Foundation, Helping the children with Cancer at City of Hope, presents its third annual "Evening with the Stars" at 7 p.m. Sunday at Club Ivar, 6356 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood. Daytime soap-opera fans are in for a treat as the cocktail party offers a chance to mingle and get autographs from their favorite daytime drama stars and bid on silent auction items. Last year's red carpet event included celebrities from "General Hospital," "Days of Our Lives" and "The Young and the Restless" and many are attending again and bringing more of their cast mates.

Rachael Worby , music director and conductor of The Pasadena Pops, will receive a Red Carpet Award for her support of the performing arts in Los Angeles The Women in Theatre will present her with a Red Carpet Award at a luncheon on Oct. 20 at The Castaway in Burbank. The event is held in honor of National Arts Awareness Month. Award presenters will include director and choreographer Cate Caplin , actress Wendie Malick and singer Marianne Murphy . The judging committee selected her to receive the award this year because she exemplifies the spirit of the mission of Women in Theatre, said Talmadge Ragan , president.

A crowd estimated between 2,000 and 3,000 turned out Wednesday evening to help celebrate the grand opening of AMC Theatres' new 16-screen complex on Palm Avenue. Hollywood celebrities, city officials, residents and others sampled food and got glimpses of their favorite celebrities as part of a block party and film tribute featuring actor Kevin Bacon. Bacon, wife Kyra Sedgwick and a host of other actors, including James Cromwell, Donna Mills, Gordon Clapp and Ed Begley Jr., were on hand for the red-carpet benefit, which raised an estimated $80,000 for Earth Communications Office, an environmental action group, and the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank.
