GIRLS’ GOLF Pacific League Match No. 2 : Senior Emily Tubert won low-medalist honors and led her Burroughs High team to a first-place finish Tuesday in the event at De Bell Golf Club. Burbank finished third. The Indians won the match with a team total of 217, followed by Arcadia (224) and the Bulldogs (241). Tubert, the reigning league champion, fired a three-under-par 34. She was followed by teammates Ravipa Losakul (41), Jasmin Daniel (44), Jena Rae Serranzana (49)

Jeff Tully BURBANK -- In recent years, Glendale Community College has had its share of standout baseball players from Burbank. Athletes like Freddy Sanchez, Karl Castro, Wes Hutchison and Matt Hellman have made their marks with the Vaqueros before moving on to greater success at larger colleges. This season, former Burroughs High star Spencer Steward is looking to add his name to that list. Steward, a freshman outfielder, will be the lone Burroughs contingent on the Vaquero squad.

MISSION VIEJO — With a sharp pain in her right leg, Samantha Bogatz set sail for the finish line with plenty at stake. Competing in the 200-meter dash, the standout Glendale Community College track and field athlete crossed the finish line in a school-record time and breathed a sigh of relief. Bogatz captured the event in 24.09 seconds to repeat as champion at the Southern California Championships on Saturday afternoon at Saddleback College. Bogatz earlier repeated as champion in the 100, clocking 11.85.

For several months in the winter of 2001, the answer to that question was a toss-up. Here was a pitcher on the Crescenta Valley High baseball team who couldn't throw more than two consecutive strikes during a practice, let alone a game. Here was a junior who had the potential to be a regular starter, but wasn't living up to the promise.
