Writer just doesn't get that this is a democracy In his letter, Jim Carlile mentions that he is truly amazed at the PERC members who are studying airport expansion issues. The assertions made by Carlile in his letter go beyond amazing, somewhere in the realm of ridiculous. Carlile rants about the committee having the temerity to even listen to those of us who were involved in the passage of the ROAR initiative, and states that ROAR supporters were not invited to be members of PERC.

After watching our latest PERC meeting on television, I am truly amazed at these committee members. One would think that being given the honor of appointment, the last thing they would do is give so much credit to those meddling ROAR members and their ilk. Why, on one broadcast the committee spent more time asking Howard Rothenbach his opinions about what we should do with the airport than our own city manager, who...

Although it's no surprise to me that Will Rogers has a tendency to pick and choose the various "facts" he uses to make a point, someone really has to rebut his selective omissions in today's column (Feb. 6). Since Will has implicated a letter of mine in his recent musings, I suppose it's up to me, even though there are better things to do than wade through his foamy prose again. Ted McConkey has responded reasonably to the various twistings and turnings of the Measure A lawsuit.

Karen S. Kim BURBANK -- The two opposing sides of Measure A will face off in a public forum Saturday, just two days before ballots are expected to be mailed to Burbank voters. And both sides are diligently preparing for battle. "I don't know what to expect, but I just can't see any of the arguments against Measure A that I've heard that hold water," said Howard Rothenbach, coauthor of the measure. "I think we'll be able to defend our position when they attack us."

I, too, am a Burbank resident and homeowner who is concerned about our airport. The answer, however, is definitely not to be found in Measure A. Granting a curfew on flights between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. at the Burbank Airport can only happen with the blessing of the Federal Aviation Administration. ROAR and the residents of Burbank ultimately will have no say in the decision, and the authors of this initiative know that to be a fact. The only thing passage of the measure will accomplish is more taxpayer dollars being spent on litigation.

Lew Stone, president of the Burbank firefighters, is one of the authors of the ballot argument against ROAR. Burbank residents are rightly proud of our firefighters. However, more than 75% of them do not live in Burbank. So why is our ballot booklet providing us an opinion of non-Burbank residents who will never have to endure any of the negative impacts of an expanded airport? The Burbank firefighters and Lew Stone providing the argument against ROAR is absurd and hypocritical.

Karen S. Kim BURBANK -- The League of Women Voters will host a forum Sept. 8 for the special election of the Restore Our Airport Rights initiative, or Measure A. Measure A will be put to Burbank voters in the form of an all mail-in ballot to be tallied on Oct. 9, with ballots being mailed out as early as Sept. 10. The ROAR initiative demands that the city implement airport limiting measures, including a cap on flights and passengers, a mandatory curfew and an agreement from the airport to limit expansion.

I am very insulted by Councilman Dave Golonski's 60 seconds for 60 days trial period change to the first period of oral communications. Only a few short months ago, Mr. Golonski was panhandling for votes to be reelected. Smiling, shaking hands, pinching babies' cheeks and promising, if elected, to serve the people of Burbank. Serve the people? How can you serve the people, Mr. Golonski, if you don't have more than 60 seconds to listen to them? Golonski's 60 seconds for 60 days trial period is perfect timing.
